pcie sata expansion card not recognized

Hello,

on a very old pc with only 2 sata ports I installed a pcie expansion card. The card is powered (blue led on) but is not detected by Windows 7. The motherboard is an Asus a8v-e se and the expansion is a Beyimi PCIe sata (marvell88se9215). Before returning it, I would like to know if I can make it work with my system. If not, could you suggest me which expansion card I can buy?

Hi Traccerare,

Your best bet is in the BIOS. See if you are able to configure or set the PCI-e expansion drive through the BIOS. I did the same thing on the very first rig that I put together from 2008 recently, so that I could get as much data transfer as I could out of that old girl using an SSD. I had similar detection issues, but once set in the BIOS, it worked like a charm.

Please, let us know if you’re able to set it up in the BIOS.

The BIOS will likely identify the expansion card as a “SCSI” device.

Traccerare, please take a look page 2-13 in the manual PeterOz posted. Under the “Main” in the BIOS you should see the info below. Please let me know if this is not the case.

Refering to the manual as an EXAMPLE, the primary drive is listed as “ST321122A” with the CD drive as “ASUS CDS520/A”
Select Secondary IDE Master and attempt to configure the drive. The info is on page 2-17 of the manual. It may auto detect it a “SCSI” device or by the name/model the drive attached to the expansion card. Please let us know if that works.

Primary IDE Master is configured “Auto” and the BIOS says “none”. On the other hand how could it be otherwise since the card I added is not connected to IDE but on pci express x1 slot ?

Marvell also has a CTRL + M command you can try while its booting for the card’s own configuration menu.

Also, are you trying to boot from a drive on this card or are you just adding another drive?
If booting, try changing the boot priority in the BIOS, if using for an extra drive the windows drivers should have allowed you to access your drive.

There is still the possibility that the expansion card is too new for the old Mother Board. There is over a 10 year gap in the equipment. I have run into this as well.

Compatibility can be an issue for sure. It’s hard to tell but Marvell tech support should be able to confirm it it is incompatible. ASUS should also
have a list of compatible controllers that have been tested and confirmed to work with the motherboard should it come to that. At least, I bought an incompatible card recently but that card was causing my PC to BSOD, so if you aren’t getting BSODs then that’s a good sign I guess.

I would go back to the device manager and confirm that the Marvell controller can be found. If it can be found and your issue is that you connected a new drive to the controller and you cannot find it in the file explorer, then I would make sure that the drive is formatted and configured. You cannot access data on a raw drive if it hasn’t been formatted.

From Windows search menu, search for “computer management” > Find the “disk management” button on the left > Right-click unallocated disk and click “initialize”.

You should then be able to configure RAIDs using the Marvell’s configuration menu mentioned above
