Hello,
My computer has fairly recently started to make a lot of noise on startup. The noise comes from inside the tower. The computer is noisy for a few minutes and, then, the noise stops. This happens at most startups.
Is this a cause for concern? Otherwise, the computer works fine. I attach a recording of the noise.
Could be one of your fans.. You could open up the case and then listen for the noise down to pin point that. I am assuming that this startup is after your pc has been off for several hours.
Hello,
Yes, I think it is one of my fans and yes, the noise happens after the computer has been off for several hours. I have now opened the case to pinpoint the source of the noise, and I attach two photos of the fan I think it is coming from. One of the photos is a close-up and, on the other one, the fan in question shows at the bottom of the picture, towards the middle.
(I hope the pictures attach properly this time. As for the audio file of the noise, which I tried to attach yesterday but which apparently didn’t attach, here is a link to it: Vocaroo | Online voice recorder )
So, if the noise at startup is coming from the fan on the photos, do I just need to replace this fan? If I don’t replace it and it keeps making a noise, is the noise going to be just an annoyance or could it lead to a bigger problem?
Hmm, i didn’t think that noise was all that bad. Anyway if you want to replace that fan all is good.. To make sure it is that fan take a soft brush or your finger and gently touch the fan blades to see if that noise stops from that fan. If you are going to change that fan out make sure your power down the pc , after that unplug the power source press the power button to drain the rest of the power and make sure you ground yourself by touching some metal on your pc. Then just match the fan and order a new one.
could be dust build up.
doesn’t sound like a bearing, just whines loudly.
I’d be replacing it with one specifically tailored at being quiet - which most are these days if you stay away from the really cheapo units.
for example, I have found Noctua fans to be excellent.
your pic shows 2 fans 1 back case fan and 1 cpu fan
Power off
hold fan blade on back case fan blade
turn on - hold for a couple of seconds
If still noisy
turn off
Hold cpu fan blade HOLD FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS ONLY.
You do not want to cook cpu.
Turn on
Am I right in assuming you are in a cold climate
If yes
The grease in the bearings is getting cold and going stiff.
once it has been on for a couple of minutes the grease warms up and starts to lubricate agian = no more noise.
Replace which ever fan is noisy.
As Bruce mentioned Noctua are good fans
