Your card should be able to do that?

Make sure you plug the 4k screen into HDMI or DP (it looks like HDMI with a flat side) to ensure you can get 4k, DVI might not be able to.

A cord like this will work for your TV if it needs HDMI instead of DP.

HDMI to HDMI or DP to DP otherwise.

Yes, thanks for the pic Pyro. I received a moulded male-female adapter today. The hdmi cable to the tv is a long one and goes under the floor to the room where the tv is, so a separate lead wouldn’t have worked. I can report that It works very well as a fully scaled two monitor setup, with 1080p on the tv and 4k on the monitor. The only problem is that what I wanted (and this was probably the cause of the confusion) is the image on the monitor duplicated on the tv. I tried the duplicate option but it switched my monitor to 1080p and not 4k, which is what I thought a single video card would only be able to do. So, it looks like I’m back needing two video cards?

Try setting the 4k screen as your main display and see if that allows you to run it at 4k and the other at 1080p.

Having 2 GPUs will not do what you want it to.

Ok, well I’ve tried making changes in settings, and in the Nvidia Control Panel, and it will only allow different resolutions when the monitors are set to Extend and not Duplicate. In Duplicate I can either set both to 1080p or 4k. In 4k the image on the monitor is perfect but on the 1080p tv it’s not very good.

I believe this is your situation with having two different display resolutions while attempting to duplicate screens? @phillpower2

I’m not sure if there is a way to get around it other than using a lower resolution than the monitor or a higher resolution than the TV.

Buying a second video card will not give you a separate video, in the current day it might not even work, dual GPU’s have been fading out for a couple years now.

As mentioned previously the present GPU is not good enough for more than the one screen as the 2GB of VRAM is just enough for a 32" screen, a single better quality GPU that has at least 4GB of VRAM will overcome that problem but not a resolution issue, as also previously mentioned the screen that offers the best resolution should be connected to the port on a GPU that also offers the best resolution.

Hi Bruce, Phill and Pyro, many thanks for all of your help. I think we have got as far as we can now and it looks like I either need a better video card (I’m overdue for a PC upgrade so that will come in the near future) and/or a tv upgrade to 4k. For the time being I will run either the monitor or the tv, but not both at the same time, and switch it on screen rather than swapping plugs each time. So, some improvement in convenience there. Thanks again, Steve.
