hello, i’m having an issue with my computer where whenever i play certain games, most notably Overwatch and Battlefield 1, my monitors will turn solid colours, i’ll hear a faint buzzing until it fades out, and either my computer will restart itself or i’ll shutdown by holding my power button. while it is in this state, i can still use numlock as well. when i reboot, in event log i get the error that the pc hasn’t been shut down properly and a processor error:
A fatal hardware error has occurred.
Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
Processor APIC ID: 0
(the APIC ID changes each crash)
this is the more detailed report/xml view
depending on how long i leave my computer off, it tends to last a bit longer before it crashes. usually by the hour and a half mark is when it happens, but if i immediately reboot and try to play again it gradually gets worse. there was one point where it would happen almost immediately as soon as overwatch loaded any sort of models on the title screen. the crash only happens with battlefield 1 and overwatch. before they crash, they run perfectly fine and temperatures never go above 78-80c. other games, such as minecraft with shaders and rimworld run fine and flawlessly. i run battlefield 1 on medium preset and overwatch on a competitive preset, with both framerates locked at 154 fps. i’ve done stress tests for about 20-30 minutes and it hasn’t crashed either. it also works fine on regular tasks like spotify, discord, and web browsing.
something weird i found is when i first tried battlefield to see if it wasn’t just overwatch causing problems, the game ran fine when i was matchmaking but i decided to cancel and go into my video settings. right after i set my refresh rate from 60hz to 144hz, it crashed almost immediately. i’ve tried rebooting with only one monitor connected (i have 1 144hz monitor and 1 60hz monitor) and it still happens, regardless of refresh rate. this has been happening since mid december. it only started happening a little under a week after i got my new 144hz monitor.
i have a zotac 1050ti mini i’ve previously used before the 970 upgrade. i swapped back to it after these problems persisted and it works fine, no processor errors, crashes or anything.
i bought this card off of a friend back in october, who has cleaned the card thoroughly and reapplied thermal paste. he has done tests before sending it to me and it worked flawlessly. it still does when it isn’t crashing.
my specs are:
Ryzen 3700X
Asrock B450M Pro4
Corsair Vengeance LPX 24GB (3x8)
Corsair RM650x PSU
Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD (500gb, i use this as my boot drive and for games/programs i use frequently)
WD Caviar Black WD2002FAEX (2TB, for odd things and documents)
EVGA Geforce GTX 970 FTW Gaming ACX 2.0 4GB
nothing is overclocked, everything has been left at stock.
so far, i’ve tried:
something is making me believe that it is to do with the 970, but i just find it odd that it runs flawlessly on anything that isn’t a game that uses directx/direct3d
thank you for reading and let me know if there’s any extra information i can get to help.

so far, i’ve tried:
- reseating everything
- thorough cleaning
- reinstalling video drivers/clean uninstalls with ddu
- reinstalling games that have been having issues
- installed chipset drivers
- a different power supply
- different cables between the gpu and power supply
- removing sticks of ram
