Win PC sometimes does not boot (POST seems to fail) - WHY?

    Hi everyone

I’m new here and hope that I find some help to my problem

When I boot up my PC , the POST gives one short beep, which indicates a successful booting process. (Mainboard Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H, further system info see attached file)

However, Sometimes my PC does not boot and then there is NO beep at all. I then power it off and turn it on again and usually it works fine. However, lately, in cases this happens , I have to turn if off/on not only once but several times.

I went through numerous forums had help-lists and found numerous potential reasons, which are basically:

    CMOS
    graphic card
    faulty RAM sticks
    power connectors

However, my understanding as a layman would be that,

If CMOS battery is dead it would either not be possible to reboot the PC after power off/on attempt or I would get a reset time&date message

Same goes for the other possible reasons: if these were the case I shouldn’t be successful with my off/on attempts at all, should I ?

Furthermore, all the above reasons should be indicated by various short/long beeps according to a post I found https://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=2248.0

As I said, I am a layman, so it would be great if some more knowledgeable guys could confirm my thought or give some advise what might be the reason for my problem.

    thx for any help

    Hello ferion,

Couple of possible causes, flaky PSU, dust build up in the memory or PCI-E slots and/or blown or leaking capacitors on the MB.

Please provide information about your computer, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the CPU, MB, the RAM (including the amount) add on video card if one is used and the PSU (power supply unit) providing these details will enable folk to better assist you.

Flaky means weak or failing, the real good brands of PSU like Corsair, EVGA and Seasonic can have a seven or a ten year warranty so unless yours is a high end one of those being several years old you may find that it is a failing PSU.

To help with checking the capacitors on the MB see info here see example pics to the right at the link.

      You are welcome btw
