Not Reading DVD ROM

went to load a game I have had before and cd rom would not read the disk, after trying other disks that were fine I decided that the disk itself was at fault, so I purchased the game disk again and tried that, again it wouldn’t read it.
I then uninstalled the CD ROM drive and re-booted my machine so that it would reload and then tried the disk again, it worked!!! I played the game for a few hours and the next day it was back to doing the same, the CD ROM would not read the disk, any other disk no problem but it wont read the one which was fine the day before.
any suggestions would be appreciated

age of DVD unit?
any chance you can try the problem disc in another DVD unit?
it could be as simply as the DVD laser is dirty, or the unit failing, and/or the DVD has scratches.
