Installing new SSD hard drive.

I ran some scans on my current hard drive and seems it could fail. I ran CHKDSK, and errors were repaired successfully. Rather then take a chance and I can kill 2 birds wth one stone, being I want to upgrade to a SSD. I getting ready to run a program called Macrium Reflect to make an image on a 1tb external HD I have. I’m formatting (not quick) the external now.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

while the Macrium image transferred to the new SSD is possible, the best approach, in my humble experience, would be to put the SSD into the PC, remove the current HDD and put that into an enclosure and load Windows 10 (or 11) afresh.

use the Windows Media Creation Tool to burn the last build onto a bootable USB stick and install from that.

yes, you have to reload everything again, but it’ll be a clean slate on a clean drive.
the Macrium image process will copy everything over, including a bloated Registry, all your internet cache, and your Windows temp files, settings, logs, history etc.

and if there are corrupted system files, it’ll copy those too.

once the PC is running from the new SSD, then you plug in the old HDD in its enclosure and copy your personal files over.

if you are putting in the new SSD and installing a new OS, no cloning required.

if you are wanting to use Macrium, then you click Clone this disk… on the first screen in Macrium.
