CPU Heating up quickly

Hi,

I’ve recently had a couple issues with my PC that has caused it to run slowly and crash once. I have fairly confidently diagnosed the cause as my CPU overheating.

I am pretty sure the cause of this is the program BOINC which uses my CPU when the PC is just idle, the problem being that I had it set up to use my whole CPU and didn’t notice any effects until the recent crash. I’ve now noticed that my CPU heats up to 70/80+ degrees when BOINC is set to use only 10%.

Is there any way to check whether the CPU has been permanently damaged? It seems to heat up very quickly but as I’ve never monitored it before I can’t be certain.

Just to add rough timescales, with BOINC at 10% of CPU time the temp will hit 80’s in around 1 minute. At 5% the temp will still rise to 80+ (even hitting 100) in around 5/6 minutes.

I’m assuming that at very least I will need to invest in some cooling paste or CPU fan but just want to make sure I’m going to replace the part that’s not working!

One of the first things i would do is stop using Boinc on that pc and get one that is dedicated to Boinc.. Boinc is known to be hard on pc’s.. I do agree with you that you should check your paste and cpu fan.. After you have done these things with the pc, then check your pc and see if cpu still over heats..

Hey, thanks for the help!

I’ve had a look and the fan seems to have a broken foot or 2 so it doesn’t fully clip into the MB. It seems to still be fully making contact on the CPU but I can’t be 100% so I will have a look for a new fan.

I’ve also stopped using BOINC as even at extremely low allocations of time it’s still causing the CPU to go up to 100 degrees, it just takes longer to get there. I’ll get a new fan on order and see how it effects the temp
