Hi family first post here. I received this laptop from family member, and wanted to know if I can upgrade the cpu on this model. From what I researched it’s a socket 988b rpga and the maximum cpu can be a i7-2640M, and with a maximum of 8 gb memory. I’m not 100% sure if I’m correct. If not what would be my maximum possible upgrade for this laptop? Thanks for all your posts and guidance.
Can I upgrade my hp pavilion g6-1d73us cpu intel core i3-2350M to i7-2640M?

PeterOz has confirmed what I was thinking as I was reading down the posts.
also, even if you could, laptops are designed to work with the CPU included, in regards to power demands, thermal loads and heat dissipation.
you’d be tweaking something upstream without considering the downstream affects.
and then of course there would be the expanse, mobile rated CPU’s tend to be in a high price point, and if the unit was a few years old, it maybe worth considering selling it and putting the money towards a model more suited to your current, and future, needs.Comment

Originally posted by Don02Thank you for your reply. I did see a forum that mentioned a upgrade to Intel Core i5-2540M also on my data sheet I downloaded for this pc it has the i-7 listed as cpu possible upgrade if I read that correctly (see attached photo)
Even if you were able to remove the present CPU and fit an i7 CPU it will not work as the BIOS will not recognise the i7 CPU, there is no BIOS update to allow you to be able to do this either.

Thank you all for your time and I appreciate your help. I know I’m at a novice level, lol but I’m currently studying for my CompTIA A+ and I’m doing some hands on practice for experience. I’m currently doing research on building my first desktop computer. I already did some pc repairs on a couple of laptops from family members so far. Hopefully one day I’ll be on the other end giving advice then askingComment

One more question. If y’all don’t mind. Im about to order two 4 gb DDR3 Sodimm rams as I see this pc max out at 8 gb. I did notice on my research that this model only accepts 1333mhz version, and if that’s the case then buying a 1600mhz will be downgraded to 1333mhz because of the motherboard. Can you confirm that I’m correct about this? Thanks againComment
