Computer Freezing but sound continues to play (forcing a forced restart)

    Hello!

Problem: My computer will freeze on me. I’m not sure why, but it happens when I am playing league of legends (yes, I know… league). It will freeze, but my cursor is still able to move around my entire computer, I can hear the sound of everything going on in the background, and I have to force restart my computer for it to work again. I have a 3 monitor setup, I usually have discord, google chrome, blitz.gg, and league running when this happens. I don’t know how to find out what is going on considering everything I’ve tried so far. I need help.

I’ve checked event viewer, nothing happens before nor during the freeze. Everything that pops up on the event viewer is because of the force restart. I’ve checked the reliability history, the only thing that shows is my computer not shutting down properly… I’ve ran memtest (not mem test x86) to see if it was my ram as well as the windows memory diagnostic tool (standard test) and it says that there are no errors. I’ve ran the windows hd test to see if there are issues there, nothing as well. I don’t really know what other tests to try at this point, but this doesn’t happen with any other game.

I play league of legends fullscreen borderless, and I have discord on my left monitor and google chrome running on the right. The last time it froze, I was moving a google chrome tab on my third monitor. Don’t know if that helps, but it is something that I noticed. Anything helps, this forum is always the best, thanks in advance.

    Specs:
    i7-7700k
    16gb ram (2x8gb)
    1080 gpu
    250gb ssd
    1tb ssd
    750 wt corsair modular psu

    Respectfully,

    Luke

Edit: after typing this post, I got bored and looked at a few of my other posts on this website. On my first post a user by the name of Antman replied and suggested that I download CystalDiskInfo for the problem I was having at that time. Well I downloaded it just now and ran it, it says the health status on my 250gb SSD is “bad” and my 1tb ssd is at “99%”. I don’t know if that is the magic wand that tells me what the problem is but I guess its a better start than where I’m at now.

First step is to close everything you do not need e.g chrome, discord etc. test.
You could try this league repair tool - it is dated 2016 but could still work.
also can you Download and run and then post. Speccy - Free Download

        To post: CCleaner Support Community

Can you go here and download speed fan and install Click On Me .
Run speed fan then click on the Exotics tab > show the magic. post a screen capture.
Have speed fan open on a second monitor and watch the temps as you play.

Hey PeterOz! Thanks for the quick response

I tried the league repair tool and did the option where it completely reinstalls and repatches league. So far I haven’t had the issue come up since then, but I also haven’t played league since I did that (haven’t really had the time).

I plan on playing later today so I will definitely update this thread if it happens again. I’ll have speedfan up too the next time I play. Also, I don’t know if I mention this before, but this doesn’t happen in other games that I play (currently I’m switching between League of Legends, Escape from Tarkov, and War Thunder).

I downloaded both of the other programs and ran them. The photos should be attached to this reply. Thanks for your help btw! <3

If the temps you posted are at basic use and without playing games you are running hot.
Also when you play league if it fails reboot at take discord out of the equation - make sure it’s not running in the background with task manager.

I need you to follow the instructions in post 4 about how to post speccy info we need the whole thing.

The temps I posted are with 3 streams open on twitch and discord open. There are other programs open but minimized to the task bar. That being said, this problem doesn’t seem to happen at all when I’ve played my other games, so although the computer at idle is running hot, I doubt that would be causing this problem. Then again, one never knows and that is why I’m here.

I personally don’t know how good the cystal thing is either lol I just noticed it in a reply on a very old post of mine and thought I’d give it a shot. Sort of trying anything at this point to fix this and find out what the problem is. When it happens, I’ve never had it fail the reboot. All three monitors freeze, the cursor sometimes freezes and sometimes doesn’t. The sound on the computer still plays in the background… I can hear twitch streams, league of legends still, and people on discord. It won’t let me do anything though so I have to hold down the power button on my pc and force restart it. I’ll keep you posted on the temps while I’m playing

                Hi Luke
To test can you go to control panel> Programs and remove all installs of Java 32 & 64bit.
                Reboot.
We can reinstall later if needed

I’m still going to remove java, but I played league and streamed yesterday with all of my regular programs open and it did not freeze at all. I had the temp program up the whole time and my CPU kept saying -42 degrees Celcius for every core. The GPU never went above 68 degrees Celcius and hovered at around 55-63 when I was playing. Going to play more tonight and see how things go.

Sorry for no reply, I guess it’s fixed cause I haven’t had this issue since I last replied. I believe the repair tool with a full reinstall and full repatch fixed it. As always, thanks for everything! <3
