CPU Swap. Computer no longer POSTs

Hi Everyone,

I’m at my wits end here and thought I could come onto this forum for some help. I made a server on Windows 10 with a Core i3 4130T. I noticed that the workload is becoming too much for the CPU, so I swapped it out with a Core i7 4790k. With every piece of hardware working BEFORE the upgrade, the computer now no longer POSTs. Putting the old CPU back works again.

Here’s the specs:
CPU: Intel Core i3 4130T (Old), Intel Core i7 4790k (New)
GPU: MSI radeon r7 370 2gb
MOBO: ASUS h81m-e
RAM: 1x Corsair Value Select 4 GB 1333 MHz
PSU: Seasonic SS-400FL2 Platinum Fanless 400W

Troubleshooting

[li]I have updated the BIOs to its latest version by putting my old CPU back in, downloading the latest version and installing it onto my mobo. [/li][li]The latest BIOs version supports my new CPU. [/li][li]I have checked the compatibility of the mobo and CPU. They are compatible. [/li][li]I’ve reseated the RAM and also used the second slot. [/li][li]I can confirm my core i7 works on another computer. [/li][/ul]

Additional Information:

[li]I do not suspect 400W Power supply to be the issue because I’m not running the server very hard, but it could be a possibility. If it was because of the PSU, shouldn’t it still POST?[/li][/ul]

An observation and a suggestion.

GPU: MSI radeon r7 370 2gb

According to the MSI specs here the PSU that you have been using is 100W short of what is required, going from an i3 to an i7 just may be the straw that broke the camels back.

What I suggest, remove the add on video card from the computer altogether, connect the screen to the appropriate video port on the MB, reassemble. test then post back with an update for us.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve removed the add-on video card from the system and the issue still remains. Since the post, I’ve also reset the CMOS battery by move the jumper over one pin on CLRTC , removing the battery, then reassigning the jumper back to its original position and putting the battery back in.

Well if not the PSU being too weak the only other thing of note is the single stick of RAM, the new CPU being the overclockable k version may not like the RAM only being able to run at 666.5MHz, you have ruled everything else out so have left us almost zero to be able to suggest I`m afraid

No updates still. I have yet to find a solution on the Internet for my issue.

Oddly enough, when I swapped my Core i5 4670k into the system, it works flawlessly. The TDP on the 4670k is 84W—only 4 watts less than the i7. While it works for what I need it for, it isn’t ideal.

Thanks for the update and if you ever do resolve it we would appreciate you letting us know, we can either reopen your thread or add the info via an edit for you.

Before ever trying the i7 again I would make sure that I had two sticks of matching RAM to give the CPU the 1600MHz that it will work best with.
