Edit to add: have you got the disk online, right click on it to check this.

    Sorry but we can`t see what you are seeing so can you do the following;

    Upload an expanded screenshot of Disk Manager for us.

    Access Disk Management via Run.

    Press the Windows+R keys to open Run, type diskmgmt.msc in the empty box then press OK.

    To capture and post a screenshot;

    Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start…all programs…accessories…paint…left click in the white area …press CTRL + V…click on file…click on save…save it to your desktop…name it something related to the screen your capturing… BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG …otherwise it may be to big to upload… after typing in any response you have… click on Attach files to add the screenshot.

    Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

      Screenshot of Disk Management.

      It expands if you click it. I don’t know how to post it in expanded form.

      I’ve accessed Disk Manager by Run but I still get the error message “a device which does not exist was specified”

        Did you see the edit to my reply #7

        The drive needs to be online before it can be initialised,

          I hadn’t seen your edit, sorry.

          I don’t know what having the drive “online” means.

          It’s not showing up in File Explorer if that’s what you mean.

            Right click on Drive 1 and you should see the option to put the drive online.

              if I right-click on Drive 1, I get the following options:

              Initialise disc (this is grey)

              Offline: if I click it I get the same error as reported above – “a device which does not exist was specified”

              Properties

                See guide here

                If you are following those exact same steps without success we will have to try Diskpart.

                  I’m not offered administrator rights when opening Disk Management but I have, as suggested in the guide, accessed it via Computer Management - still to no avail.

                    Just to add to our woes, Disk Manager is now NOT finding the new drive.

                    The original 500 MB failing drive is still recognised but the new 1 Tb drive is no longer appearing on Disk Manager

                      Not sure what is going on here but it if you are doing exactly as directed the only explanation is that you have been sold a pup, got to ask, after going through all the previous grief why did you purchase another used drive, you can get an out of the box new 1TB Western Digital Blue for £30.99p

                        You may well be right.

                        I shall return this drive and purchase the Western Digital Blue you suggest.

                        I’ll keep you informed of developments.

                        Many thanks for your efforts so far.

                              No problem (y)

                              The drive even though new will still need formatting but if you are going to install Windows on it it will get done as part of the installation procedure.

                              Be sure to use the SATA port + cable and power cable from the PSU off the old 500GB when you fit the new HDD, reason being is that you know that each of them work.
