    Ryzen 5 3400G Freezing

    Hi Guys,

    I’ve been dealing with this freezing problem for quite some time now. I just bought my PC about 3 months ago. It randomly freezes, the mouse powers off (no laser), the keyboard freezes - won’t let me press any key, and sometimes the internet (wired) gets disconnected, and all I can do is to force restart. I’ve done pretty much everything I know and searched in hopes to fix the problem, installed Windows 10, tried to use HDD instead of SSD, changed parts, I also checked Event Viewer but no errors are showing up when the computer freezes.

    Specs:
    Ryzen 5 3400G
    OCPC 2x8GB RAM 3200mHz
    ASUS B450 TUF Gaming Motherboard
    Plextor 512GB M9Pe M.2 SSD
    750w PSU
    Windows 10

    It kept on happening so I went back to the shop I bought it from and they changed the parts to:

    Ryzen 5 3400G
    G.Skill Trident Z NEO 2x8GB RAM 3200mHz
    MSI B450 Mortar Max Motherboard
    Plextor 512GB M9Pe M.2 SSD
    750w PSU
    Windows 10

    After changing the parts, the freezing continued (randomly) and then I got a tip from a friend that it might be because of the integrated graphics I’m using (Vega 11). So then I bought an MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Super Gaming X (6GB DDR6) GPU a couple of days ago, and just this morning, my computer froze again.

    Has anyone experienced the same with these specs? What could be causing the freeze? Any recommended solutions?

    so what are the common components between the two parts list?
    CPU and SSD?
    if so, you have tried going to a HDD, so that only leaves the CPU.

    when going to the HDD, did you clone the SSD or install a fresh Win10?
    and when the mobo was changed, was that the same Win10 OS or a fresh one installed?

    have you updated the mobo BIOS?
    are you overclocking anything?

      Hi Bruce,

      When I went to the HDD, I installed a fresh Windows 10 same when the mobo was changed. And yes, the mobo’s BIOS is up to date and I’m not overclocking anything - except for the RAM I guess? I have it set to 3200mHz on the BIOS, the XMP profile.

        so the RAM is still the original from the first parts list?
        it wasn’t changed by the PC shop?

        take the RAM out of OC mode for starters.
        also, have you been monitoring the internal temps, of the chassis in general, the CPU and the GPU?

        are the freezes completely random - not during a certain program or at a certain time after the PC starts?
        that is - you can’t make them happen?

        and when booted from the SSD, is the HDD disconnected?

          The RAM was changed but just the brand, so from OCPC 2x8GB to G Skill Trident Z NEO 2x8GB. I did revert the RAM speed back to 2933MHz from 3200MHz, so far it’s not freezing and keeping my fingers crossed that it won’t anymore.

          I’ve been monitoring temps and they’re at normal both when idle and stressed.
          Min ~ Max temps (in degrees celsius)
          CPU: 47 ~ 60
          RAM: 42 ~ 46
          HDD: 44
          SSD: 52 ~ 54
          GPU: 52 ~ 54

          When stressed test:
          CPU: 85 ~ 87
          RAM: 44 ~ 47
          HDD: 44
          SSD: 54
          GPU: 55 ~ 66

          And yes, the freezes are totally random. Sometimes, when I just have Google Chrome opened, playing Valorant, or even just having Discord opened. I can’t really make them happen, the entire has gone through a stress test several times but never froze.

          I once suspected the HDD to cause the freezing so the last time I reformatted the computer, I didn’t use the HDD at all (not even connected to the motherboard) and still froze a few times.

            ok great.
            looking like an OC issue then.
            honestly, from 2933 to 3200 would hardly be noticeable by mere mortals.

            and although the CPU hitting 87 under stress isn’t too high at all, personally I’d like to see it come down if possible.
            what heatsink/fan is on the CPU, the stock one or a after-market one?

              I’m hoping that it’s just the OC issue, it’s been 2 days and didn’t freeze since. I’m using the stock fan, thinking of getting liquid cooling once the freezing problem is fixed. Thanks for the tips Bruce! Results are yet to be seen. If it doesn’t freeze for a whole month, I’d say it’s fixed.
