    Hard Drive disappearing.

    Hello,
For the past few weeks, maybe months, i’ve been experiencing issues with my hard drive. First time I experienced any trouble with it was when my games on steam stopped working for unknown reasons. When I checked the integrity of game files, it said, that nearly 30GB is corrupted and they’re needed to be reinstalled, but when I tried to download those 30GB the update didn’t finish and just said :“Corrupted update files.” I tried a few more times, but then eventually i noticed, that the drive D is completely missing. I went to driver management and tried to find something there. The drive was missing even there, so i tried to rescan for drives and it didn’t show up. When I restarted the laptop, the drive was back, with no errors, or anything like that. I started using external hard drive for the time, because the other drive was and still is unusable. I couldn’t find any help on YouTube or Microsoft support, so I pretty much hope you’ll guys figure it out. Anyways I didn’t find any actual reason why the drive is disappearing but it looks like it disappears only when it’s being used, never disappeared while idle.

    Hi there.

    Any info about your Laptop?

Have you tried the HDD’s manufacturer test?

Turn OFF the laptop, press the NOVO button and select BIOS setup. There you can see the manufacturer of your HDD. Go to that site and get the appropriate software.

I’m sorry, but I don’t seem to find any site. The only thing I found when in bios setup is that the malfunctioning hard drive is ST1000LM049-2GH172 When I search this term it only shows stores where I can buy that hdd. I’m really sorry if I didn’t get what you asked from me.

Okay, i think i found what were you asking about. So what i did was that i went on this site : https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/
Downloaded the so called “seatools” and ran a scan for the malfunctioning driver. But the scan failed, because the driver vanished before it was done scanning.

I think this points to a failing HDD. Back up your data while you can.

Well, what are the most common causes for a HDD to fail, because i don’t actually know and just like to see if anything will add up.

Is there any possibility that something went wrong when installing the drive ? Like they made a mistake, have you ever heard that something like that happened ?

No, hard drives can just die. Could have been an impact on the laptop that did it while the disk was still spinning. Could be just bad luck.

Wow, that sucks. Well, i’ll try to take a look inside the laptop, just in case something happened there.

Right, so I looked inside the laptop and I found something ? I don’t know if this is causing the problem, but I’ve found that there’s something with the connector. Like there’s that blue plastic that should perfectly aline with the end of the motherboard, right ? But it doesn’t, it’s sticking out but I can’t seem to get it to aline. So I don’t know if this might actually cause some trouble, but yeah.
