Fail to post / strange error

    Greetings all,

    my rig
    650M PSU (8 years old)
    Asus Z170-E
    EVGA GTX 1070 FTW3
    16G Gskill ram (2x8)
    Intel 6600k CPU
    Samsung 870 1gig

    here is my issue.
My daughter was playing sims 4 (you know really stress testing my PC) when the system locked up. When she hard reset it with the power button the display didn’t receive a signal and the mobo had 3 quick beeps a pause then 3 additional beeps. I talked with ASUS and they claim it’s a vid card failure.

when I removed the 1070 and plugged direct I to mobo I still had post failure but after second retry it posted and loaded windows. I reseated the 1070 and failed to post the first time but second time posted and loaded. However I’m still getting random fail to posts from time to time. I also get a self check overclock failure but I removed the OC from the bios.

sorry this post is so long. I’m thinking either the PSU or mobo is failing. What do you all think?

    Hello,

A failure like that means the board is going bad. Have you tried a spare PSU to rule that out first?

I don’t have any spare parts. So unfortunetly I have to take an educated gamble. I’m not rich but I’d rather gamble 100 on a PSU than 500+ on a vid card.

you say board do you mean mobo?

More than likely,it would be prudent to look into a new mobo right now…

3 beeps at startup could also indicate a memory issue.
for starters you could try removing the RAM, wiping the chips and contacts and the mobo slots with a brush and reseating - then cross your fingers.

I’ve had a lot of success with simply cleaning the memory chips and vid card to stop the 3 beeps at startup.
the contacts oxidise and a good wipe fixes it.

but… failing that, next logical component would be the mobo.

I will certainly check the memory today. I did a quick look and finding a mobo That’s not used with the correct chipset for a 6 series cpu is gonna be “fun”.

you should have no issue, if need be, to get a mobo that supports 6th gen CPU’s.
they should be backward compatible. for example, I looked at some Gigabyte ones, and when they say “supports 9th and 8th gem processors” that’s not the limit, that’s just them stating it works on the newer units.

I will look into it more however intels website states the 300 series chipset is not comparable with 6 series CPUs.

However maybe I’m wrong? I sure would like to be as I don’t want to buy a used MOBO

You are correct, the only chipsets that will support this CPU are as follows: B150, B250, H110, H170, H270, Z170, Z270. 8th, and 9th gen 1151 chipsets may have the same socket, but the chipsets do not support 6th and 7th gen CPU’s. Z170 and Z270 are the only chipsets that will support overclocking this CPU and the Z270’s have MUCH better RAM support for XMP profiles (I have found that most Z170’s just don’t work at all for overclocking RAM with XMP profiles), however, the other chipsets will still accept this CPU at stock clocks. As far as getting a used motherboard goes, I’ve had great luck with that one online auction site everyone knows, (not sure if we’re allows to reference outside sites directly), just make sure it comes from a reputable seller with lots of reviews and make sure that it is not listed as “for parts”. Also want to make sure it comes with an I/O shield. A lot of them don’t.

I finally found a mobo reasonably priced that is compatible. However I need to order thermal paste. I’ll update soon.

I installed the new mobo and system powered up fine, I’ve been restarting it and hammering it as hard as I can to see if I can recreate the failure. So far all signs point to a bad mobo.
