    My PC turns off when I play games

    Hey, guys I really need your help on this and I don’t really know what to do at this point.

    Some context for you. I will be playing a game (currently Total war Warhammer 2) and the PC will just turn off. This will happen within around 30 mins of play. This also happens with other games as well, however, I can play Fallout 4 for hours and hours and the PC is fine. When the PC turns off, it just restarts itself. There is no blue screen or anything like that.

    I noticed that it was really dusty in the PC itself so I gave it a good clean and now it is, for the most part, dust-free. I even took out the CPU and CPU cooler and cleaned them as well. I also applied more thermal paste after cleaning the CPU just in case you were wondering.

    After this didn’t work, I thought that maybe the PSU was on its way out. I have had it for a few years (since 2014) so I thought that this could be the issue. I bought a PSU tester and plugged it into the PSU. All readings came back normal and it was functioning as it should be.

    I have also updated graphics card drivers and still no joy. I’m starting to think that maybe it could the graphics card itself but I really hope it isn’t. My graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 and I only bought it a couple of years ago.

    If anyone has suggestions or maybe you know what could be the problem then please let me know. If you need any info or want to ask a question then please ask away and I shall reply the best that I can.

      Hello thecolm12,

      Can you post the brand and model name or number of both the PSU and the MB.

      As a PSU puts out various voltages +3.3V, +5V and +12V it may appear that the PSU is working correctly but it is not, any significant drop of any output can prevent the system from booting up, the other scenario is a significant increase in the output which can be worse as it can fry one or more major components such as the MB, CPU, RAM, add on video card etc.

      The attached video here is one that I use as an example to show the sort of equipment that is required to conclusively test a PSU.

      What the equipment does is simulate a computer under load and so the PSU behaves as it would when it is powering your PC, multi-meters and the basic testing devices that you can purchase from some merchants only test the basic voltage output from the PSU rails and so cannot be relied on as 100% conclusive.

          The PSU does not meet the minimum power requirements required by a GTX 1070 which requires the system to be powered by a minimum of a good quality brand 500W PSU that can produce a minimum of 33 amps on the +12V rail, for a high end GPU such as yours the PSU should also be a minimum of Gold efficiency rated unit as well.

          What I suggest, until you can get the appropriate PSU sorted, remove the add on video card from the MB, store it somewhere safe, hook up your display to the appropriate video port on the MB and use that until you have the appropriate replacement PSU

                  Hey Phill, I managed to buy a new PSU and that seems to have solved the problem. (It’s an EVGA 600W) Everything is running smoothly however I have come across a new problem. When I was playing a game (Total war Warhammer 2) the game crashed and then the PC soon after. The game can crash from time to time so I wasn’t completely shocked. However, when the PC crashed, it came up with a blue screen and it said that Windows was trying to figure out the problem. It also had a emoji in the top left corner. At the bottom of the screen is said ’ hardware failed’. I can’t remember exactly what it said but it was something along those lines. This happened twice yesterday. Another strange thing is that when it crashed the first time, I went to load the game again and it had uninstalled it from the PC.

                  It could be the new PSU but I also bought a new SSD for the game as it runs much faster that way. I think it could be the new SSD as so far it only happens on one game (Total War Warhammer 2) and the game is installed on the SSD (The SSD is a SanDisk PLUS SSD 240 GB) However, I’m interested to see what you think.

                  Thanks again Phill for solving the PSU problem as it was driving me crazy for months. It seems I can’t catch a break when it comes to PC problems lol.

                    Being unrelated and going off topic you should and may need to start a new thread but do the following for us and we will take a look then go from there;

                    Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

                    Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

                    List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
                    List Installed Programs
                    List Devices (Only Problems)
                    List Users, Partitions and Memory size

                    Click on Go.

                    Post the resulting log in your next reply for us.

                        No hardware issues flagged up and most of the errors are old with the exception of a couple yesterday which are Windows related.

                        Couple of questions for you;

                        Check the times in the above event log errors in MTB, were you playing the said game at the time.

                        Are crash dmps enabled on your computer.

                          Looking at the two errors from yesterday, I think the times match up from when I was playing.

                          The crash dmps are set too ‘Automatic memory dump’ I hope that’s what you were after.

                            You may have run out of RAM while you were playing the game, do you have a single 8GB stick or two 4GB sticks, have highlighted the error/s in red for you and an explanation of the cause for you here which explains the unhappy face and hardware failure message that you mentioned.[/color][/color]

                              I have two 4GB sticks. I have read that 16GB is better when playing the game so you might be right about the RAM. I may have to invest in the near future.
