    CPU Overheating

CPU Overheating even before windows loads up (in bios screen). Eventually shuts itself down.

System had been running fine for years. Recently bought VR headset (Rift S) and was told I have so errors with the usb3 controllers so tried to find newer drivers to see if they would solve the issue as the be headset sensors weren’t starting. Possibly relating to the usb3 issue. Since then the cpu started to overheat.

    Specs:
    Windows 10 home
    P9X79 LE rev 1 motherboard
    I7-3820 3.6 GHz processor
    GeForce RTX 2070 Super
    Kingston DDR3 2x8gb hyper beast
    120gb SSD
    3tb HDD
    1tb HDD
    Corsair VS650 PSU

Things I have tried so far:
    Updated windows, GPU, CPU, etc.
Bought a new water cooler which made no difference.
Tried revert back to previous drivers.
Using a system restore point before the changes (the problem is that the cpu overheats and the computer shuts down before the process finishes)
Computer is clean and well maintained and we’ll ventilated. All fans work. Filters clean.

Please get in touch with any suggestions. Thanks

    Hello

How old is the pc? Have you checked the cpu fan to make sure it is working? When is the last time you cleaned the inside of the pc?

      Hey there,
Motherboard, RAM, CPU, water cooler, HDD’s are all about 7 years old. I have added a new GPU about 2 months ago and a new SSD about 4 months ago.

        Ok..

Is it clean on the inside? When was the last time you changed the water/coolet in your cooler?

Yes cleaned it recently. Water cooler is a sealed unit and, as I have already said in my main post, I bought a new water cooler as I thought that was the issue initially and it didn’t make any difference.

            Hello Bumble,

What case do you have and how many fans are in there?

It’s a cooler master case but no idea what it’s name is. It has only one fan on the front and the one on the back from the CPU cooler. Plus the fan in the PSU. However I am not sure why it’s relevant as this computer was running fine for years up until recently. It was built by pcspecialist.co.uk and I’ve kept it in good order and up to date.

Did you remember to remove the old thermal paste and then add new?
Did you also remove the plastic cover(s) some people miss this.

Yes definitely. Cleaned old paste off both the CPU and the heat sink. Removed plastic from new cooler heat sink. Added new thermal paste. Checked that it was seated correctly as I tightened the mount.

                    Hi Bumble,

Please understand that in the world of IT, determining the root cause of an issue requires eliminating possible causes. And we are thorough, hence the questions. We’re here to help

The case is relevant because if a fan failed or if there’s inadequate airflow all of the sudden, it will cause overheating.
