Ringing noise coming from motherboard area

Hello, I’ve recently bought a new custom built pc and ever since I turned it on for the first time it’s been making this annotijf high pitched ringing noise.

The noise is constant from the moment I turn on the pc to when I turn it off, I’ve ruled out coil whine as it sounds different and the noise does not change depending on what I’m running. it appears to be coming from the motherboard area but am having difficulty locating the exact source of the sound. Any ideas on what could be causing it? I’ve attached a link to a video so that you can listen to the noise for yourself.

Did you turn the volume up full? If you do you can hear a high pitched ringing noise. I’ve show it to a few other people who can hear the noise but are a bit stumped about what’s causing it.

It is obviously a bit more prevalent your end and even with the volume up full I hear only fan/s spinning, that in itself could be a clue as it could be a noisy fan bearing.

Can you post a full list of your parts and tell us how many cooling fans you have.

With the system powered off take a tooth pick or something NON Metallic that you and put between the fan blades to stop then form turning.

If you still hear the sound then move on to the next one.

This sound could be the pump making the noise as well.

If the system is that new will suggest that you contact them to get it repaired before damage causes you to loose everything (worst case scenario).

To me sounds like my HDD did just after it seized up.

It’s been running for 6 days like this and hasn’t caused any damage so I’m assuming (for now) that it’s nothing serious but not totally sure. It wouldn’t be an HDD fault as I have an SSD. Anyway here is a parts list.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3200g
Motherboard: MSI X470 gaming plus max
GPU: Radeon RX 570 8GB
Cooler : Corsair H115i
PSU: Corsair Vengeance 750m
RAM: 8GB Corsair vengeance 3000mhz
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 500GB SSD.

I have 3 blue LED fans running at the front, the stock fan that came with the case running at the back and another 2 fans on the radiator for the cooler. so 7 in total.

Yes I’ve tried that, from what I can hear the noise doesn’t seem to be coming from the pump.

Looks like you are going to have to go back to the basics and disconnect most of what is connected to the MB.

[COLOR=rgb(226, 80, 65)]The following will be time consuming but it is important that the computer be shut down, disconnected from the mains power and you ground yourself every time that you need to disconnect or reconnect each component.

With the exception of the Corsair H115i disconnect all cooling fans.

Restart the computer and listen for the noise, any noise see if you are able to pin it down, if no noise, connect one fan at a time to see if it is one of them, if no noise still it only leaves the GPU so return that to the system and test.

That does sound like quite a lot but I’ll have a go at it and see what works, before I do that I’m also going to take the side panned off and try to pinpoint the exact area of the noise. One thing I have noticed is that the noise stutters for a second or two during shutting down the PC.

Rattles, squeaks etc are something that I can[ICODE]t put up with and no matter how long it takes I wouldn[/ICODE]t settle until I had pinned it down so I know where you are coming from, just be sure to take your time and do things safely.

The good thing about doing the above is should the noise be there from the outset you will only have the cooler, HDD and PSU as possible culprits, an afterthought, if the noise is still there with just the cooler, HDD and PSU fitted try also disconnecting the HDD, the computer will obviously not boot but the cooler and PSU will still run which will narrow things down further should the noise still be there.

I’ve already ruled out the PSU as the sound isn’t coming from that area, I only have an SSD and not an HDD so it won’t be anything to do with the storage either.

My guess is that it’s either the cooler fans or fan on the radiator, something on the motherboard or the GPU. I’m funny about noises too and it’s really bugging me so I’ll need to have a proper examination of what’s causing it.

You can rule out the MB as well as the only noise you will ever hear from them is always when something has gone badly wrong, a squealing capacitor being one such example.

Well the computer has been running without any problems for about a week now so yeh I can definitely rule that out as if it was something serious it would’ve caved by now. I imagine it’s either the GPU or something to do with the cooler fans on the radiator then.
