GPU crashing PC

I’m back again boys. I don’t want to be here and you’re probably sick of me but I don’t know where else to turn.

So as you probably know by now I bought this PC off my friend and it used to run games fine but recently I can’t even get into the Fortnite main menu. I’ve tried the OCCT stress test on my CPU which can run at 100% no problem but the second I click the GPU stress test the computer reboots immediately. Do I just have to admit the GPU is dying or is there a solution to this? Thanks again sorry for being a pain in the butt.

You should know the script by now, when starting a thread you need to include in your OP a full list of all your parts using any brand and model name or number.

Edit to add, can you also describe the type of crash, PC shutting down, black screen etc , cheers

On my phone ATM so here’s my last speccy. Only difference is the RAM is dual channel

It just reboots back to the log in screen. As if I’ve just turned it on. No freeze or blue/black screen.

What about the brand and model name or number of the PSU.

We could do with waiting until you are actually on the computer tbh.

The PSU is the Corsair VS450w. All I know is it’s the AMD Radeon R9 200 series as that’s all it says in speccy how would I figure out the exact model? Going up to my computer shortly.

We need to know the exact GPU details but I reckon straight off that the PSU is the cause, VS = budget which in turn = weak.

Not around for an hr or so but you can upload a new Speccy url for us meanwhile if you like.

According to GPU-Z it is the Radeon R9 270x

I don’t get how it used to run games okay now it just straight up doesn’t do it

                  Thanks for the additional info

Your GPU requires a minimum of a 500W PSU, you can check here

In answer to your question of why things used to work ok, a PSU that is just below the required spec will often power up the computer but all the while the computer is in use the hardware is being deprived of the power that it needs so it starts to struggle and the GPU being the most power hungry tends to suffer first, double edged sword for you here because the PSU not being the best build quality will be getting real hot inside when it is trying to support the GPU, this unfortunately means that the GPU has been damaged by constantly struggling for the power that it needs and overheating as a consequence, options, you could try getting a good quality brand 500W PSU and hope that the GPU has not suffered any long term damage.

I was afraid you would say that

My friend ran it for years with the exact same specs and never had an issue. This just bad timing then for me?

Scared I buy a new PSU and that doesn’t resolve it then need to buy a new GPU. Combined those two looking at £200 plus. Tempted to get a new system all together.

Everything else in Speccy looks 100% good and the CPU temp of 18 °C is unreal.

Next time that you have the PC on, do a bit of light gaming then place your hand at the back of the case where the PSU expels the hot air and see how hot the air feels, don`t touch the case whatever you do.

Tried some Valorant there. Went 3 rounds smooth and then it randomly it rebooted. Was playing at 130fps so came back on and lowered it to 60fps and played 21 rounds no problem. Checked the task manager and it’s saying the power usage is very high and the GPU is running at 30%. Felt the air at the back like you said and it was barely warm. Colder than a breath. This PC likes me when it wants to and hates me when it wants to it seems! To add the GPU was running at 40% at some points which to be fair I thought it would’ve crashed before it hit that number. Is there hope?!

There is hope for the GPU but not if you continue to use a sub standard PSU I`m afraid :cautious:

The VS range made category C - Recommended for entry level desktops, Office desktops, APU Systems and category E - Potentially dangerous in multiple scenarios on the PSU tier list here

Okay now it’s rebooting when just on Google. Something is dying. Going to bite the bullet and try a new PSU I think. What one do you recommend? (I know you sent a 500w one before but I’m tempted to go slightly higher just to be safe).

Anything more would just go to waste but fwiw everywhere is sold out of what you need + the prices have gone up, covid virus strikes again, least expensive that I could find here less expensive than the 500W PSUs that I was looking for + has a five as opposed to three year warranty, same suggestion as is always made, if you can, borrow a 500W PSU to test the computer first before making any purchase.
