    PC beeping and nothing showing on monitor

    Hey guys. I’m a total noob when it comes to PCs. I’ve just bought my friends PC Specialist computer off him but there is no display on the monitor. I’ve tried HDMI, Display port and DVI-I to VGA connections and none of them seem to work. When powering up the computer makes a long ish beep followed by 3 short beeps then another long ish beep. Wondering if this has anything to do with it. Any help would be amazing. Thanks!

    Come to think of it it’s more 1 long then 3 short then another short beep after that

      Hello MichaelT1994,

      The RAM may have been disturbed when the computer was being moved.

      This only if you are ok with working inside of a computer, remove and then reseat the RAM securely, while inside the case, make sure that all connections are secure, reassemble and see how it goes.

        Hi thanks for the reply. Yeah I tried that earlier on. Took them out and cleaned them gently and put it back in but no change unfortunately. Also took out the graphics card and put it back in securely but no luck. Is there any way I could send a video to you of these beeps so you might have a better understanding of what they mean and what’s failing? As I say I’m a total novice at this stuff.

          Sorry but there is no video card in the list of specs so it looked like onboard video was being used.

          We have BIOS beep charts so no need for any video thanks.

          Can you post the brand and model name or number for the motherboard, power supply and video card.

          Can you also tell us if you are using a USB keyboard or the wired PS/2 type.

            The motherboard is an ASUS M5A97 LE 2.0.
            I’ve googled what the beeps mean and it saying it could be a hardware component failure

            The power supply is a Corsair VS450

            And I’m not sure exactly what video card it is but here is a picture

            I’ve not actually used the keyboard at all yet. Seeing as I’ve never gotten a picture.

                No idea what the GPU is I`m afraid, you may need to ask your friend what it is if we cannot get things sorted.

                Are you saying that you have not had a keyboard attached to the computer at all since you got it.

                Can I ask that you do not quote every reply, it really does not help any and just makes for unnecessary reading, thanks.

                  The only specs he sent me were the ones I attached earlier. I’m not going to be using it for serious gaming so wasn’t to bothered about the GPU but maybe I should’ve!

                  I’ve attached the keyboard and mouse into the usb port and they both lighted up indicating that the must be working.

                  Is there any way to find out the GPU? I will try anything.

                      Did you not ask if I’ve had a keyboard attached to the computer? I have through the USB port in the front yes

                      Maybe like an hour or so after trying to get something on the monitor I first connected the keyboard to see if it would go on and it did

                        Thanks for clarifying, when you said “I’ve not actually used the keyboard at all yet. Seeing as I’ve never gotten a picture.” it wasn`t clear whether or not you had been trying to boot up with no keyboard attached to the computer and the reason why it was important that we had it confirmed is because a computer will not boot up without a keyboard being attached as the BIOS checks for one as part of POST (power on self test) if no KB is detected POST will fail and one of the clues is often three error beeps.

                        Now that we have that cleared up, don`t suppose you have a wired PS/2 type keyboard, these are better when troubleshooting because if there is a problem with the USB ports a USB type KB will not work.

                        Couple of other checks for you to do;

                        If there is a supplemental power dongle from the PSU to the GPU required, make sure that it is securely connected to the GPU.

                        If no wired keyboard is available, try the present KB in different ports, only the black USB 2.0 ports though.

                        You have 16GB of RAM according to the spec sheets, if this is 2 Xs 8GB sticks, try one stick at a time and try them in each of the four slots.

                        Try the GPU in the other PCI-E slot.

                        Remove the CMOS battery from the MB for ten minutes or so then reinsert it, this will clear any possible bad MB settings that could be causing this.

                        Will be going offline soon I`m afraid but will check back tomorrow morning UK time, good luck meanwhile.

                          Thanks you so much! I moved the GPU into the other PCI-E slot and now it’s working. Not sure why the other one isn’t working like but oh well. Amazing thanks so much!

                            Some good news at least as you at least know that the CPU, GPU and RAM etc are ok (y)

                            The problem with using the second PCI-E slot is that it is only a X4 slot which means that you will only get 1/4 of the GPUs performance capability.

                            What you can do if you like is get Windows fully up to date then run Speccy and post the url here for us so we can take a look at the MB to see if there is an issue with the X16 PCI-E slot, it will also tell us what GPU you have which may also help as we will be able to check its specs.

                            Entirely your choice and if we don`t hear back from you we will mark your thread as being solved, Speccy info below;

                            Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

                            To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

                            In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

                            In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

                            Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.
