CPU OVER HEATING DESPITE WATER COOLING + FANS

Hey all,

Major Help Required!!

As you will see in the pic, I have 4 fans, a CPU cooler and a 240mm radiator at the top. I have completed some research and gone for the neutral air pressure set up. So, cool air is sucked in from the fan on the left and suck out through the fans at the top - I am under the impression this is the correct way to do it.

The 240mm radiator and 2 fans (top left) is part of the GameMax Iceberg water cooling kit.

The issue I am having is that despite this cooling, my CPU sometimes hits over 95c and the pc shuts down with BSOD (machine check error).

I have hiked up all fans to 100% spin speed but to no avail. I cannot think what I am doing wrong here.

PC specs;

Windows 10 Pro 64bit
Intel 9700k CPU (overclocked by scan.co.uk before purchase) on Coffee Lake (core speed 5000 MHz)
16gb Corsair Ram DDR4
Asus Prime Z370 P11 Motherboard
GeForce GTX 1060 6gb GPU
750w Corsair PSU
GameMax Iceberg water cooling with 240mm rad
4 x 120mm fans

Any suggestions on where I am going wrong here would be very welcome!!

thanks in advance

I’d be winding the clock back and getting the rig stable first, so that means turning off the over-clocking.
next, are you sure the water power is working.
as shown from the picture, the RGB fans are powered but is the pump.

and what do you class as over heating, what is the CPU temp maxing out at?
what software is telling you this and have you got a 2nd opinion from another source?
don’t trust Speccy for temps - it has a long running bug in that regard.

thank you for such a prompt response. ill answer each point individually.

regarding winding the clock back, i am not too sure how to do this (although i understand its through the bios?) my only issue with this is my warranty is invalid if i mess with the clocking of the CPU.

I presume the water cooling is working, yes the fans are lit up and yes cooler is lit up on the CPU but how else can i tell?

I am using Afterburner to monitor FPS and TEMPS in game, and when the PC crashes, the screen freezes for a few moments and i can see the CPU temp is 95c. Typically, when gaming, the temps are still around the 50 or 60c mark which is still too hot in my opinion.

just to add to this, when I ran Furmark CPU burner test it immediately shut down the PC with the temps hitting that same level.

Also, no other opinions just yet

while 50-60 is above average, it is well within tolerances.
and that range is completely dependent on load - so in a game, that could easily be your normal range.
yep - 95 is alarming, hence the shutdown to prevent damage.

as to over clocking, yes, some suppliers do say it can void your warranty, but it sounds like that has already happened by scan.co.uk (who are they - the PC builders?)
personally I’ve never understood the OC need - if i wanted a faster CPU I just bought one that could do it. I do understand OC is a cheaper way to achieve the same result but it adds its own complexities.

I’d still be digging out the motherboard manual the Pc should have come with and start getting my head around the unwinding of the OC setup.
you are right, it is in BIOS but changes per mobo manufacture and BIOS supplier.

Hello Bruce, thank you for responding.

Yes 95+ is very alarming and absolutely why its shutting down. Whenever I run any stress programme, such as AIDA64, the PC just shuts down.

Scan.co.uk are PC builders ( https://www.scan.co.uk/ ), you can purchase packages from them. I purchased a Motherboard, CPU and Cooler (fan not liquid) which was delivered to me already built and tested - effectively signed off.

At this stage, I have no issues with defaulting the CPU to standard clock. But my thread really is about the cooling, and how I can change that,m or do I have it set up correctly. The thermal paste was changed the other day which made no difference. Am I missing anything glaringly obvious???

Should the fans/radiator be set a certain way? other than the way I have mine?
