    Inspiron 5680 CPU Cooling

    CPU Core Temps are sometimes spiking above 90 degrees when under load during games. Noctua NF-A8 PWM will not spin properly when plugged into CPU Fan header, spins fine with SYS Fan header. so the fan is not defective. Stock fan runs fine. There are no fan controls in the BIOS and SYSFAN doesn’t work either. Is the PWM version the wrong version for a CPU fan? Should I replace the entire stock heatsink/fan/thermal paste with a Noctua L9i or will I just have the same problem when it is plugged into the CPU Fan header?

    the SYS FAN header probably uses VCM (voltage controlled mode) while the CPU FAN can use PWM and sounds like it is adjusting the fan speed below what the Noctua can handle.
    or maybe the 4-pin CPU FAN header doesn’t support PWM and instead of using PIN4 to control the speed, it is using PIN2 to control the voltage.

    what voltage is the Noctua rated at?
    is must be more than 5V as they do a model called NF-A8 5V PWM.

    my guess is the fan and the mobo aren’t quiet compatible.
    mind you, in all my years building PC’s I’ve never had a fan behave like that before but maybe mobos and 3rd party fans are changing.

      It’s the Noctua NF-A8 12V 4-Pin PWM. Spins too slow to properly cool the CPU. Considering just starting fresh and parting everything out to a new motherboard and case.

        check the motherboard manual to see if the CPU FAN header can supply 12V.

          I managed to install a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO with Noctua NT-H1. I had to cut a bit out of my side panel for it to fit, but it works and the temps are staying under 80.
