    Welcome to PCHF George captain,

You can purchase a used replacement but unlikely that you would get one new.

Can I ask what is wrong with the present device.

Put simply it does not work at all just makes a lot of noise as the reader moves up and down it worked fine yesterday

Reason why I asked what was wrong with the drive is because a lot of older drives suddenly stop working when the computer gets upgraded to Windows 10, are you running Windows 10 and can you describe the noise for us, optical drives use lasers to both read and write and nothing moves up and down but instead rotates at speed.

Can I ask that you do not quote every reply, it really does not help any and just makes for unnecessary reading, thanks.

The slide holding the laser moves up and down as the disc rotates so it’s not locking on to any track . I have had windows 10 for some time so it’s probable that its just bust it is very old .as no one has any suggestions for an olternative would you say a external dvd unit is a good idea?

If me I would purchase an external drive rather than a used internal one so yes I agree, external drive is the way to go, an example here
