    Confused about video card

Hi, I wonder if you can help me.
I bought a Dell XPS8930 last year with an Nvidia GTX1060 card. When I right click on the screen and click on the Nvidia control panel it says that there is no monitor connected to the Nvidia GPU. The monitor seems to be connected to an HDMI2 port, which is the way the instructions were given. There’s a vacant socket where the expansion cards are. Is the 1060 GPU actually being used? How can I tell?

It seems I need an HDMI to DVI adapter to connect to the GPU. Is that correct? Or a new cable?

I looked up the 8930 specs and it says that if you buy s separate GPU the HDMI port and the other display port should be covered, which they weren’t, and to connect the monitor to the card, which it’s not.

We need to know the brand and model name or number of the screen so that we can check the specifications.

        This is complete nonsense.

Which is true or you would not have gone to the trouble of fitting an add on GPU in the first place.

If using a computer and not a mobile phone, please avoid adding multiple posts while waiting for us to reply to your OP, edit your last or opening post to include anything that you wish to add, when viewing the boards members/staff will always check out an OP that has no replies, if you reply to your own OP it can appear to others that you are already being assisted and your request for help could be overlooked, something that none of us want.[/COLOR]

The monitor came with the system.
          Well, that’s what they said:

          Quote:
3 Connect the display. NOTE: If you ordered your computer with a discrete graphics card, the HDMI and the display ports on the back panel of your computer are covered. Connect the display to the discrete graphics card.

It’s true except that’s not what the installation instructions said.

Tip: try replying civilly or don’t reply at all.

Not sure what your problem is sorcerer but if anyone has been less than civil it is you, forums have rules and one of them is not bumping your thread which is something that you did not once but twice, if you feel that the explanation in my reply #4 which politely explains why you should not bump your thread is in some way uncivil feel free to contact the site manager and report the post.

Calling my reply complete nonsense when I was quoting the site advice was not civil.

I don’t report posts for that sort of thing.

So it’s a big crime to add posts to my thread? I’m so sorry.

Anyway, with no useful advice nor any forthcoming by the look of it, you may as well close this thread.

Where was it said that your reply was complete nonsense, you being told that you had to cover up the ports was complete nonsense as doing so would achieve nothing.

As explained bumping threads is against forum rules regardless of what forum you post on, you were at least afforded an explanation here rather than getting a warning like you would on some other forums.

Yes it would, it would have stopped me plugging the cable in the wrong place - according to the instructions I was given. That’s why it would be done.

Well I’m all cut up about bumping the thread, I’m sure it caused all sorts of problems; maybe caused the whole site to crash.

So I"ve ordered an HDMI to DVI adapter which should arrive next week, so I’ll see if that fixes the problem. Thanks a bundle for your help.

Good to see that you at least have a sense of humour.
