    CPU/MotherBoard upgrade

    Hey guys!

    My current build is:
    Intel i5-6400
    Motherboard Intel B150M PRO-VDH
    24GB RAM
    NVIDIA geforce 1070

I was considering upgrading my CPU, however in order to do so I also need to upgrade my motherboard as my current one only supports 6th gen. Do you guys have any suggestions and do you think it is worth it to upgrade?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hello

What are you going to use the new setup for? From the spec’s you have now is it gaming or video rendering?

It’s for gaming, mostly games like NBA2K20, Rocket League, Fortnite, CS:GO.

      Edit: unnecessary quote removed.

Checked the specs of the MB here and it appears to be the smaller micro ATX form factor, before suggesting any replacement MBs we will need to know what type of case you have so that we can check it for compatibility.

Can you post the brand and model name or number of the case for us.

Are you aware that unless you have a full retail product key for Windows should you upgrade the present MB you will need to purchase a new product key.

Couldn`t find any for sale in Portugal but you may be able to use the Amazon info here not an overclocker myself but unlike earlier chipsets the Z170A will allow you to ramp up your settings should you wish to do so, next best was the ASRock Z170 Extreme3 S1151 ATX Intel Motherboard

            You are welcome btw

              Hello!
I’m also not an overclocker myself, thanks so much for the recommendations!
Regarding the CPU to go along with one of those MB, do you have any suggestions?

              Thanks as always!

Apologies Joao Lago I misread your OP and thought that you only wished to upgrade the MB

We can take a look at more up date CPU and MB options for you but before we do can you tell us the brand and model name or number of the 24GB of RAM, we need this info so that we can make sure that any CPU and MB that we suggest is compatible with the RAM.

Apologies on my behalf for not giving all the necessary information at once to help with your analysis and suggestions!
The 24GB of RAM consists of two 4GB units of DDR4-2400 Sport LT from Ballistix and two 8GB units of DDR4-2400 Sport LT from Ballistix, is that enough information? Sorry if that’s not enough, if you need more information could you tell me how to get it for you?

Thank you once again for you availability and time!

No apology necessary on your behalf as it was I that misread the info

Just looking at parts for you now, your RAM is restricting your options I`m afraid as the latest Intel CPUs tend to want at least 2666MHz RAM and AMD CPUs at least DDR4-2933.

Do you prefer AMD or Intel, either way I would suggest that you go for a CPU and MB that have integrated graphics.

                    You are welcome

Didn’t think my RAM would be the issue
Regarding the AMD Intel discussion, as long as it works I don’t mind wich side I go with. Do you think I should have one with integrated graphics given that I have a GTX 1070?

Thank you for your time and help!!

Your RAM is not an issue but it does mean that any CPU and MB must be compatible with it as in restricted to 2400MHz.

An AMD CPU and board will normally work out less expensive than if you go for an Intel CPU.

Always go for the integrated video option if you can, it is your safety net should you ever happen to have problems with any add on video card.

I will head off and see what I can find then get back to you.

                        You are welcome

Yeah that’s what I heard about AMD, I’ll wait and see your recommendations!

Thank you for your amazing assistance and help, I’ll wait for your answer.

I didn’t know this forum until when I started to do some research about if I should upgrade my build or not and I couldn’t be happier to have found this forum, your assistance has been amazing I am very appreciative!
