Laptop's Hard Drive Dead Should I Do Warranty Deal or Buy New Laptop?

I bought my Dell laptop from Costco 1 year ago and the hard drive is dead. Only after having it for one year! It’s covered for the 2 year warranty, so should I send it in or is it pointless to do?

you pay (indirectly) for the warranty, why would you not use it?
they won’t care about your data, simply replace the drive and reload Windows image with factory bloatware.

Oh I understand, I thought they could save your data if their removing the hard drive and replacing it. Can’t they do that to?

No it is not their responsibility to save and or back up your data that is up to the user.

it would have been written in the warranty somewhere (yeah I know - who reads those!!!)
something along the lines of “we take no responsibility for your data” and “when servicing your PC, if the drive needs work we will reload Windows and set the PC back to factory settings”.

plus, depending on how the drive has died, recovery may not even be an option - hence the importance of personal backups.

Sorry to say, if the hard drive is dead then your data, which would definitely be your responsibility, has gone unless you want to pay a fortune to TRY and recover it. Unfortunately you have just learned a very valuable lesson about backing up. Had you made backups it would be an easy task to recover EVERYTHING back to your new replacement hard drive.

Remember data you have not backed up is data you do not care about.

well since the hard drive is dead, and IF the data was savable, I would ONLY be able to save the files, not be able to see my google chrome bookmarks or what programs I had on my desk top right?

Hypothetical questions, if the drive is dead depending on why the drive is dead some/all data may or may not savable. Data recovery is a VERY expensive service and with no guarantees of success.

When you get your new hard drive installed make regular system images and you will NEVER experience ANY data loss again, sorry but that is how it is.

So how do you do a system image to store said data and it being saved? I know this Dell laptop had Windows 10 on it.

Windows 10 has its own inbuilt backup app but it’s only ordinary, suggest you choose one of the below.

There are several VERY good free backup programs that will do what you want. Macrium Reflect and Aomei are probably 2 of the best. Here’s a guide on how to with Macrium and Aomei, few versions old now but the same basic procedure.
