4K Video causing CPU downclock

Hey everyone,

I recently built a new pc, and attached to two monitors. One 4K monitor, and the other one 1080p. Whenever I play 4K videos on youtube using chrome, my CPU usage jumps to 100% and causes my CPU to revert to base clock speeds. The temperatures are in the 70’s and my voltage is 1.3. I clocked my CPU to 4.2Ghz.

My PC specs are:
CPU: i5 4690k
Ram: 8gb DDR3 2133
GPU: RX 480 8gb

Is playing 4K video too much for my PC to handle, or is there another problem I am not aware of?

Couple of questions if I may;

Have you tried another browser to see if the same thing happens.

What is the brand and model name or number of the PSU.

My power supply is a Corsair CX600M. I noticed not only 4K videos, but also gaming seems to drop my frequency back to base clocks. My processor passed an hour of AIDA64, but can’t seem to hold on to it’s overclock frequency day to day applications.

I know that you said gaming also caused a problem but have you tried another browser, particularly if the the games are online such as Steam games.

The PSU is not appropriate for a high end GPU as the CX range are only entry level and therefore only suitable for school/office type computers.

Alright, thank you. it’s true my PSU is a few years old now so I will replace it with a better quality one and see if the problem persist. Thank you!

The note about the PSU was an advisory and before replacing any hardware it is always best to do any suggested checks first, something other than the PSU could be the cause or a combination of the PSU and something else.
