HP Z400 Workstation, GPU Help.

Hello everyone,

I am currently running a Windows 10 HP Z400 Workstation with these specs:

And the standard power supply.

I am planning to put an RX 580 in this PC, I have a few questions first.

Will my power supply be enough? I have a few questions first.

[li]I have read online that I will need a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter of some sort for the RX 580? Could anybody link me to a direct one that I need?[/li][li]Will my 475w (i believe) be enough for the RX 580 to run?[/li][/ol]

You are going to need to replace the PSU if you want to add an RX 580, both the 4GB and 8GB version of this GPU require a PSU with a minimum output of 500W and 33 amps on the +12V rail, a good quality brand Gold efficiency rated PSU is what I would suggest.

If I buy a new psu with 600+ watts, will I still require the 6 pin to 2x 8 pin adapter, or does this depend on the PSU I get?

First choice would be the Gold efficiency rated Corsair here, quality backed by a seven year warranty.

Second choice, Bronze efficiency rated Seasonic here still a quality brand of PSU but only has a five year warranty.

Both PSUs have the eight pin (6+2 pin) supplemental power dongle for the GPU.

Can I just suggest that before making any purchase that you measure the present PSU and compare them to the example below which are pretty much the generic dims for an ATX PSU.

Width 150 mm
Depth 140 mm
Height 86 mm

Yes, my PSU is not exactly those dims but they are around that. I think i’ll go with the second link you provided.

If not I have no problem buying the one you suggested.

Could I suggest it would be wise for you to take the sound advice already given here for a psu, instead of living dangerous.

100% agree with gus, there is one thing that is possibly worse than using a known poor quality brand of PSU and that is using one that is unheard of, for brands of PSU to trust and brands to avoid please refer to the PSU links in my sig below.

The low price and minimal one year warranty of the PSU at your link are two giveaways that you are not dealing with quality and one other is that no performance information is provided.

NB: Couple of reasons why I suggested the Bronze efficiency rated PSU, the GPU is not out of the box new, Seasonic PSUs are top quality + it has the five year warranty.
