PC going to black screen at login

Recently my PC has started freezing where the screen goes black at login and the GPU fans spin at max and get extremely loud. I haven’t made any changes to the PC besides downloading a few games prior to the issue starting. I have tried clean booting and removing any dust from the system. I even went so far as to do a fresh install of windows 10 which allowed everything to work properly but the issue persisted when installing nvidia drivers and even java (for nvidia’s system gpu identifier) on a separate attempt. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks for your time!

    PC components:
    Windows 10
    GPU-EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 SC
    CPU-i7 6850k
    MOBO-ASUS x99 deluxe II
    PSU-EVGA 850 gold
    RAM-Adata XPG x 32gb

Hi @Miklo and welcome to PCHF

Please go HERE and download the portable version of Speccy. Save it to somewhere you can find, locate the file and as it comes as a Zip file use your favorite unzip application to decompress it. Open the newly created folder and double left click Speccy.exe if you have a 32 bit system or Speccy64.exe if yours is 64bit. If you are not sure what your system is click HERE.

Now that your link has been copied please paste it into your next post. It should look something like the example below

BTW: once you have finished with speccy and no longer want it removing it is easy because it is a portable app with no install. Simply delete the downloaded file and folder you created when you decompressed it. Gone:thumbsup:

Finally got back around to it. Here is the Speccy link

I also went so far as to clear both drives while trouble shooting as I didn’t have much on them and it didn’t make any difference

Do you have another video card you can test the system with? Have you tried taking out all but one stick of RAM and seeing if the issue persists? Are you overclocking any components? Have you tried updating your motherboards BIOS to the latest version?

Unfortunately I don’t have a spare card to try out. I tried starting with one stick of RAM and there was no change. I tried doing another clean boot and no changes there. I also skimmed through device manager for any drivers that may have been marked but I didn’t see anything there either. Everything runs fine when in safe mode but other than that it still black screens at the login screen

Did you update your motherboards BIOS to the latest version and did you try setting the BIOS back to default values?

I am thinking this is either a problem with the video card, or its a driver issue. You installed the latest video drivers from the NVIDIA website correct?

Yep! I installed the latest drivers with no changes. I was able to test the card in another system and the issue persisted so I’ve got it boiled down to the gpu at this point. I opened the card up to see if it was a thermal past issue and there was nothing out if the ordinary that I could see

So will you need further assistance with getting a replacement video card or would you consider this issue resolved?
