My friend is giving me his gtx 970 and i just wanted to make sure it will work in my pc till i get a new one later this year

Have you looked at the Specifications for the card yet?

Does your power supply have 2x 6-pins Supplementary Power Connectors that can be connected to the Display Card to supply power to the card?

If it does then yes if it does not then you will need to correct that before the card will work properly.
