    External Hard Drive Disconnects Randomly?

Okay, so my title is a bit misleading. It usually disconnects under a heavy load (such as transferring a movie or game file to/from it).

    It’s a Seagate 2TB External HDD.

It seems to be holding up well, but these concurrent disconnects are raising some concerns on my end. I have a lot of audio and video files on it that I use for my production purposes. Sometimes while I’m using it in a program (like FL Studio) it just randomly disconnects and reconnects. I don’t what that to happen and end up losing my data. Being that the amount of data on the hard drive is more than the capacity of my laptop, I can’t find a feasible way to copy/move my stuff to another drive, especially since it disconnects halfway through transferring any files that total 1GB or more.

I should add it doesn’t ALWAYS do this, but it’s done it more times that it hasn’t done it.

    Looking for any advice! Thanks!

Love this forum BTW! Keep up the amazing work you guys!

Get another external HDD and back it up as a precaution.
Are you disconnecting the drive from the system properly?

I’ll try to order another HDD.

Yeah, everytime I plug it out I use the “safely remove” feature

If the HD has a separate power supply then what worked for me was to unplug both the USB cable & the power supply from the computer, then plug them back in again. In my case two drives were affected this allowed me to move all my files incl movies off the HD, then I used diskpart to ‘clean’ the drive & start anew
