    available physical memory

I just installed an additional 2GB of RAM which makes 4 GB total. It says the total physical memory is 4 GB. But the available physical memory is 2.44. Is this correct? What happened to the rest of the RAM? I have 3 GSkill 1 GB DDR2 800 PC2 6400 and 1 Corsair 1GB DDR2 800 PC2 6400. The only difference is the brand. Can you tell me why this is?

    Thank you
    Fay

P.S. I had to create another account because it kept saying error when I clicked forgot password.

If you had that name under PCHF.com, it has been lost. Please refer to this post for more information.

To answer your question, I need to know if you’re running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 10. If it’s 32-bit, it won’t sometimes recognize more than 3GB of RAM. If it’s 64-bit, failure to see all your RAM can indicate a faulty RAM stick.

To further diagnose it, I need you to download and run MemTest

Let it run for about 2-4 hours, and report back if it finds any errors. If it does, you know one or more RAM sticks are faulty.

Also, are your motherboard drivers and BIOS up-to-date?

The memory I just installed is brand new and the other two I never had any problems with them before. Before I installed the other 2 GB it was reading 2 GB for total memory. How do I check to see if my motherboard drivers and BIOS are up-to-date?

Have you checked the Swap File configuration to make sure it is set automatic?

I don’t know anything about that or how to do that.

Are you seeing this Available Physical Memory after boot? If so, that is normal. That just means that some programs are already using your 4GB, and leaving you with 2.5 left.

Also, is your monitor plugged directly into your motherboard? If so, that’s called Integrated Graphics, and the APM will always show less than your total RAM, as it uses part of the RAM for video memory.

I see you use a nVidia 8800GT, which has 512MB of dedicated video memory. If you use more than this, Windows will use part of RAM to satisfy this need.

For some reason I though I saw Virtual Memory.

Have you checked the MSConfig under the advanced boot?

Press the Windows Key + R to bring up the run command
                    Type MSConfig press OK
                    Select the Boot Tab
                    Click Advanced Options
Look at the right side for Maximum Memory and remove the check mark if there is one.
If there is a check mark then Click OK then OK and reboot the system.
If there is NO check mark then Click Cancel then Cancel again.
