So for the last year and a half, Kaspersky was a waste of money i presume?
The average user really only needs windows defender, I’d only invest in a paid antivirus if I were running a business from home. So long as the user is not downloading random stuff and clicking on this and that, opening emails from unknown sources then you should be fine. The program Ublock Origin I suggested that you install should cut out a lot of temptation by eliminating most pop ups and ads you will see. You can also Ad an adblocking DNS server. To the computer and to your router to block ads across all devices.

Not to mention a possible detriment to the PC’s performance.
That is true… Especially on a gaming machine I’d suggest just using defender…
You can skip ZHP cleaner and AVBR. I think we can forgo those tools in this situation. Simply dragging the .exe of each file onto the desktop should do the trick, but as I said we can skip if it is a headache for you. As a final check for anything that I may have missed, please run malwarebytes antimalware.
With the built in windows defender that is all that is really needed, just need to be careful downloading things. Also, I’d install Ublock Origin. Also, have your son scan anything he downloads on his computer at VirusTotal before opening it,(executing the file).
Disable windows 10 spyware with O&O software, this can chew up bandwidth while you game as microsoft is constantly uploading various data from your machine.
Disable windows update, and only enable it once a week to update on your terms not whenever microsoft feels you need an update.
Uninstall Useless to you windows apps with O&O App buster.
Download Malwarebytes v.4 . Install and run.

Malwarebytes report looks totally clean. Security check brought up some unexpected stuff- says Kaspersky was enabled…strange because i uninstalled it last night. it also noted that windows defender wasn’t enabled. At that point i tried to enable it following instructions from a youtube video but my results were different than what the video showed. It seems that because i have a trial of Malwarebytes, that when i follow the steps to enable defender, all that shows up is Malwarebytes.
maybe when malwarebytes trial ends, defender will show up as an option to enable? do you know of a free version of malwarebytes? regarding ublock origin, does that just always run on my chrome browser?

Yes but you can just uninstall it and if you install it again just decline the trial that way you have an on demand scanner at your fingertips.

Yes, it sits there blocking ads and trackers etc. It will barely use any resources, you wont be able to tell it’s there, except you will enjoy ad free browsing.
If that is all, shall I mark this thread closed and solved, or are there any other questions?
Pretty sure i did, but yet here we are. There were a lot of links you sent so i can’t rule out that i missed one. I’ll do this when i get home tonight.

Regarding Malwarebytes, you said “Yes but you can just uninstall it and if you install it again just decline the trial that way you have an on demand scanner at your fingertips.” If i recall correctly it gave me two options- a free 15 day trial, or purchasing. I’ll uninstall and try again but i remember looking for a free version the first time and not seeing one so i opted for the trial in the interest of getting things done.
You could just install again in two weeks, or let the trial run out. Really your choice. So long as you aren’t in a frenzy downloading things you should be ok.
