This has happened twice in the last 2 days. McAfee says i have 5 viruses

When i got my new computer the person here who helped me get started got rid of McAFEE on the comp. i uninstalled it. Twice now on microsoft edge pop ups come up and say mcafeee has detected 5 viruses and i need to install mcafee to get rid of them. I dont have mcafee and the pop up even says my subscription expired. It locks up microsoft edge but i can use firefox. Once i do a restart the pop ups go away and i can use edge again. Is this something to be concerned about?

Here is a screenshot of all my installed programs

Sounds like it’s either a scam site or you enabled notifications on a bad website- McAfee isn’t installed on your PC.

Do you have a picture of the aforementioned popup?

When the popups came up the 2nd time i tried to do a screenshot but the screenshot was blank. It wouldnt take. I clicked the bell thing in the bottom right and it says I get notifications from here, windows defender, and instagram. Is there a way to see if there are any other places i might have enabled notifications?

The best i can remember is the pop up says i have 5 virurses detected by mcafee and in the same box under that it says your mcafee subscrition has expired and i need to reinstall to get rid of the threats. Below that there is a button that says proceed but i wont click on anything like that because that might really install a virus

I would go down to Reset Settings and do that, furthermore you might want to consider installing an adblocker- I like Ublock Origin.

In the edge address bar type edge://extensions/ and hit enter.

Post a screenshot of it, please.

I agree with @Pyro about Ublock Origin

Click the Get Extensions for MS Edge button. Search for Ublock Origin.

That’s pretty much it. Here is some extensive info on it. Home · gorhill/uBlock Wiki · GitHub

I found where ublock origin is so i think its on there. Here is another screenshot. See where it says ad removed on the right? Is that what ublock does? Thanks again for the help.

I also have noticed there are no ads popping up on youtube now. The 5 virus mcafee thing hasnt happened for the last 2 days. Should we close this or leave it open in case it does?

Yep, Ublock will hit pretty much every ad unless it’s built into the website- sometimes it can’t help those.

I’d say now is a good time to close, and then use the computer and PM a staff member if there are any issues with the message coming back.

Next time (if there is one) try to get a picture with your phone or another device since the Windows screenshot doesn’t seem to work with it.
