Anti-malware the same as anti-virus?

Is anti-malware the same as anti-virus? If so, which program is recommended for my machine? If not, I’m interested in recommendations. Thanks in advance.

quick answer is no - they are different.
I’ll let you Google those differences.

but, for example, MalwareBytes Premium now boasts (not a believer myself) that their proactive anti-malware program, due to how it does it, is the only protection you need. they claim it does both.

you’ll find all the big-end AV products include anti-malware protection.
again, check out each of the major players for their spec sheets. (Nortons, Kaspersky, McAfee to name a few)

since you have Windows 10, MS already has a perfectly good AV software built-in, called Defender, which is what I use.
but these days it’s not about one protective program, but a layered security approach.
so to accompany Defender, I also have MalwareBytes Premium, browser adblockers and a modified HOSTS file.

These days AntiVirus falls under the umbrella of malware as do many other malicious infections. You might notice that a lot if not all the named security suite vendors label their products as anti malware products nowadays.

Whatever you do though, and regardless of what some security suite vendors say, NEVER run more than one antimalware/security suite as realtime protection at once.

Asking which security suite is the best will only invoke fanboy responses as no one security package will either pickup every threat or not give a false positive. For that reason I suggest you pick a realtime protection security app, and there are plenty of good free, and paid ones, equivalent or better than Windows Defender, although Defender has improved on what it used to be. Secondly it would be good to have a second opinion scanner to run only at times of your choice. Using this tactic will lower computer resources, give you two opinions, and prevent the possibilty of two realtime protection apps slowing your PC or indeed bringing it to a halt.

Nope, all good. Need to take my system to a shop to get it fixed and looked over, then will do a clean install of an anti-virus and any scanner that’ll keep my system clean. Thanks for the help and advice.
