my two cents…

can VPN help prevent… Yes, it helps in the same vain that any extra security would help. more is better than less (well, sort of).
but remember, VPN is just redirecting your traffic through, hopefully, tighter servers.
you are still putting your trust in a 3rd party.

I used to use SpotFlux until some of there features became paid features. Now I use OpenVPN> https://openvpn.net/ & VPNBook> https://www.vpnbook.com/
