Hi everyone, I was reading the post by jmarket about telephone scams, good advice, no one will ever call you because there is a problem with your computer but many are still caught out by this scam. This has been going on for many years and I’m still baffled that the authorities cant get a grip on it, its a really nasty con that hits mostly older people who perhaps aren’t so aware.
Here’s what I do when the call comes…
Scammer…good morning Sir I am Basil from contech computer support and we have detected a serious problem with your computer
Me… oh dear ! what can I do ? can you help me ?
Scammer… yes Sir we will help you, are you at your computer now ?
Me…(I’m right in front of my screen) can you wait a moment please my computer is in another room ?
Scammer… of course Sir I will wait
Me… (I tap my feet to make a walking sound) almost there… here I am in front of my screen, what do I do
Scammer…I want you to do exactly as I say, go to ------------ and --------- etc
Me… (after a few minutes) oh dear, do I have to turn on my computer ??? sorry I didn’t understand
Scammer… that’s ok Sir (but he’s obviously very annoyed) I will wait
Me…(5 minutes later) sorry sorry…my old machine isn’t so fast as it used to be, a bit like me, its terrible getting old, I remember when… (then I waffle on for a while about old times)…(by now he’s very irritated)
Scammer…now Sir let me help you
Me…but you already did ! you gave me a laugh hearing you sigh and getting annoyed…my computer is fine and your a scammer !
Scammer…phone goes dead :LOL:
