Wouldnβt touch an electric water heater - they are just sooo expensive to operate in the US. Our water heater is gas. We have a gas dryer and a gas log insert in one of the fireplaces. I keep the pilot light on that on all the time. Our gas bill for the month is between $17 and $23. It depends on how long I run the dryer in the month.
I know they are very expensive to run  I forgot to mention, we are in a rural area with no gas mains. We currently run a standard electric hot water heater, they only reason Iβm looking at this one is because it is supposed to save up to 65% in power consumption compared to what we currently have and itβs all free no charge for the water heater or installation.
Hi Matt, why donβt you see if you can find someone local to you that has one and ask them. 170 litres isnβt a lot of hot water, and how long does it take to recover? Canβt tell from your link because their web site links donβt work.
Good luck but remember the old saying about things that cost nothing.
Obviously you are not on βoff peakβ rates with that size heater, but stuck with βQuick Recoveryβ which would cost a fortune. Where we are we donβt have a choice because there is no gas in the area, but we are like you in Aus, and on βoff peak 1β which is pretty good with a 315 litre tank. People I know with gas also complain about the cost, and with this stupid government supplying our bulk gas to China cheap and leaving us with the dregs itβs only going to get bloody worse for gas users.
I decided to give it a try, I will keep my old one just in case this one is no good. I guess all I can loose is the money for reinstall of the old one. I will post back once installed will be around 6 weeks. I will also post if it has saved me any money on my next bill. (y)
The installation is organized for early next month, I also notice the neighbor next door has one but his house is a rental property. I heard there will be someone there this weekend so taking a look also (y)
