Replaced router, now can't access plex server externally

    Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone can help as all searches and potential fixes have failed.

I’ve had an Asus ac68u router attached to a virgin Media modem (in modem only mode) for many years and have had no problems accessing my plex server outside of my network all this time.

Last week the router died so replaced it with an Asus Ac86u router. I mirrored the SSIDs and passwords and everything re-connected fine.

The only issue I can’t resolve is gaining access to my plex server (runs on my Windows pc) from outside. I’ve got my account signed into my mum’s smart TV to allow her access to my library. This no longer connects.

I’ve tried to port forward the plex port and used the PC’s ip address but can’t get it to work. I’ve even tried to port forward to the ip address of the plex server but no success.

If anyone can offer any advice or any other changes I with really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Brian

      Is there any error message?
Have you allowed access to the server within the router’s settings?
If you remove the router & use the Hub’s own wifi connection does this work?
Do you have a Hub 3 or Hub 4?

Hi Bastet, thanks very much for responding. I’ll try to carry out the steps above and feedback my findings.

I know I have the Hub 3 and I’ve tried various port forwarding profiles but none have worked. Is that what you mean by access to the server in the router settings.

I’m assuming if I remove my Asus router I’ll need to plug in the wired pc that plex sits on to the virgin hub first?

        Thanks again.

Iβ€˜ve never done port forwarding so I would expect adding the server’s IP under the Router’s settings to be right.
You would go into the Hub’s settings then turn off modem mode, then set the SSID & Passphrase same as the Asus Router & add the Plex server to the Hub’s settings.
If this works then the problem is with the new router, if not then the problem may be a setting within the Hub or the Hub itself.

Apologies for sounding stupid but what settings do you mean when you say adding the server’s IP under the Router’s settings to be right.

I’m just agreeing with you when you state that you’ve tried various port forwarding profiles & that it is the correct thing to do.

Phew, I thought there were settings that I hadn’t even thought of. Thanks.

Problem solved! You provided the solution without even trying /realising.

You mentioned the Virgin hub which made me think and I realised that I hadn’t restarted the virgin hub since switching out the router.

Hub restarted and suddenly it now works. No idea why and don’t really care as it means my mum can be entertained once more

Thanks for all your help. Really appreciate it.

Great news. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best.
