    Weird network issue

    I’ve been having network issues for the past several months, been putting off dealing with it because of the virus, but not really sure what more to do.

    The wifi signal is intermittent, and on two computers, both less than a year old and one of which is in the same room as the router, the internet is agonizingly slow. The ookla website puts them at about .05-1 Mbps over Wifi, but they work just fine connected to ethernet. On the three other computers in the house, the speeds are very irregular. On one that is a few years old, the speed is ~30 Mbps, on another the same age, it is the same slow speed as the first two. The real surprise has been on the Macbook which was given to someone I live with for work, which gets the full speed of 70-80 Mbps near the router and 10 Mbps in a room that the other computers need a range extender to be used in at all.

    I contacted our isp who kept disconnecting with me due to the slow speeds and eventually they had no idea what to do so sent a repair technician out, who said he examined some old wires outside our house, and that the router was fine, but when he left the speeds were the same or slightly lower than before. When I called them again they told me to buy a new range extender or just use the ethernet cable for the computers in the same room. After that conversation we started talking about switching isps but I am worried the same issue will still be present.

    Any help or info would be very welcome!

      Which virus are you referring to?

      There are several factors that can weigh in on interfere with signal strengths to and speeds.

      Have you rebooted the modem and if there is one the router?

      Ran any commands to reset the network settings on the system?

      Please open an adminstrator command prompt

      Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each command:

      ipconfig /flushdns
      ipconfig /release
      ipconfig /renew
      nbtstat -R
      nbtstat -RR
      netsh int reset all
      netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
      netsh int ipv6 reset
      netsh int ipv4 reset
      netsh winsock reset catalog

      Reboot the computer

      what security software are you running?

      Are there other WiFi signals and have you attempted changing the transmit channel to a different one?

      Use the following command to see what the signal strengths are and channel they are using.
      netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid

        The original ones were about 10 years old but the guy who came said he replaced them

          Channel: 6
          Basic rates: 1 2 5.5 11

            What about any other signals in the area for WiFi that can interfere?

            How far form the signal are the computer and what material that the signal has to pass through.

            Were they working fine before what was changed if any thing.

            They also do make range extender that use the ethernet cables.

            Have you also tried removing the reference of all the networks stuff out of Device Manager?
