accidentally activated Google Chrome profile, now everthing from default profile is lost

    Hello all,
i’m crying - i’ve never used the chrome profiles, just the default user/profile since years. Today i accidentally clicked on that Chrome popup asking to activate (or sync?) my chrome profile with my google account. Nothing immediately happend, but after installing other software, i had to reboot my PC (Win10). After the restart, i opened Chrome, only to find it in a fully reset state. No bookmarks, no addons, no recent tabs. It has me logged in to my previously chosen google account though…isn’t that great ! I’ve been googling for hours now to find a way to restore everything, but without any real luck. In the appdata/local/chrome directory, I can see that the β€œdefault” folder is still there, probably containing all the stuff of the state from hours ago, including a session buddy database. I could try now bit by bit to restore everything, but since nothing got really deleted, i’m sure there must be a way to make chrome start from this default profile folder again ? I tried removing the new unwanted profile folder (β€œprofile 1”), but upon starting chrome, it won’t use the old default, but instead creates a new β€œprofile 1” folder again. I cant believe this…is there any way to do it ? I even tried system restore to a backup point from a week ago, but it didn’t bring back chromes old state either. Any ideas ? I may lose months of research in open tabs*, help is so much appredicated here, thanks !

*i installed session buddy just for such case, but it’s of no use when the addon itsself is removed (

ShadowExplorer is a graphical front end for the Windows Vista Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Easily restore previous versions of deleted files. It works with all editions of Windows Vista.

Sorry for the lack of details. I just went back out to the country, I can supply you with instructions tomorrow if you are unable to use the tool.

This tool should be able to help you …

Thank you, but i wouldn’t know how ? Seems to be a file recovery tool, but i didn’t delete anything. I’m trying to make Chrome start from my old, default profile folder again. It’s all still there.

Problem solved myself…for anyone running into this (i read dozens of posts to the same problem over the net without any solution):
Rather accidentally again i logged in (e.g. synced chrome) with the google account i connected it with accidentally at first. Et voila - this brought back everything. It seems, in the moment when i synced to the google account the first time, chrome converted the previous β€œdefault” profile into that current google account profile. So you only have to login/sync with that google account again and all is fine. Since i have several accounts, i couldn’t remember which one it was, and also wouldn’t have thought that it works that way. This is no where documented, at least i couldn’t find it. Even google support forums suggested to rebuild everything. Well, no need at all ! Hope this helps.
