Getting a large lag spike every once in a while, not sure why.

I recently got a new desktop,
iBUYPOWER Gaming PC Computer Desktop Element 9260 (Intel Core i7-9700F 3.0Ghz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB, 16GB DDR4, 240GB SSD, 1TB HDD, WiFi & Windows 10 Home)

It started out running fine. Internet connection was VERY slow. So I went out and got a USB network adapter. First was the Netgear A6210 and every once in a while it would just disconnect from the internet and is a known issue without a way to fix. I play games so it tends to be frustrating. I ended up getting a different one, a Techkey (USB WiFi Adapter for PC, Techkey 1750Mbps Dual Band 2.4GHz/450Mbps 5.8GHz/1300Mbps High Gain 5dBi Antennas USB 3.0 Wireless Network Adapter for Desktop Laptop with Windows). While this one does not disconnect, I do get lag spikes every once in a while about 4-6 seconds long. My laptop i had before never got them, and I play games with my wife on a team, and when I am getting the lag spikes, she is fine (wifi, same router and everything).

My computer inside is not hot so it is not overheating at all. I disabled the stock wifi card that came with the machine and have updated all the drivers for the PC.
The bluetooth in the pc seems to disconnect every once in a while as well..

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

While we look at the Speccy report, one thing I will suggest is that you change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, High Performance is a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues.

Speccy actually looks ok hardware wise so I suspect that this is purely down to your internet connection, you do have a couple of items on the computer that I would not recommend DriverEasy and Spybot S&D for example, will explain as to why later.

Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Computer type: Desktop
Installation Date: 1/18/2020 11:20:54 AM Windows is shown to have been installed only yesterday, possibly a major update but have you checked the Device Manager for any yellow ! or red Xs, this in case the chipset drivers for the MB etc need to be reinstalled.

1/18/2020 2020-01 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64 (KB4532938) Windows should now be version 1909, update to this asap and again check the Device Manager as detailed above.

Only after doing the above should you do the below, no rush on my behalf as I have to head off and do a few hrs of paid work

Use the free versions at the following two links.

Stress test your GPU with Furmark

Check your FPS with Valley

Post back and let us know how the testing went.

I thought it might be my internet connection as well, but my wife and son have PCs near by, playing the same game (and my laptop) and none of them get lag as well. Even at the time I get it my wife is still moving along just fine (wifi also)

So there was an update done yesterday which is probably why it shows windows was installed yesterday. It wont find the 1909 update for some reason. Googling it shows there are some issues with it installing, might have been pulled to fix?

There are no errors or things that need to be checked or indicated in Device manager.

I pasted 2 photos of the info gained from Furmark and Valley.

I just downloaded spybot yesterday trying to see if it would find anything wrong that was causing the issue.

It isn’t a frame drop or anything, it acts like my connection just stops receiving data for 4-6 seconds, then everything catches up like it reconnected.

I really appreicate the help, I am a night shift worker so will be going to bed in a bit and will check back later. Thank you for helping me

The above is somewhat contradictory and your test results prove that this is nothing to do with your CPU or GPUs performance and is all about how you are connecting to the internet, this includes a poor service connection/device or something close by interfering with the wireless signal, the behaviour that you describe for example sounds like buffering.

Create a new system restore point first and then head here to get the latest update.

The best test that you can do atm is to hard wire your computer to the internet using the Ethernet and then do some online gaming, this is the recommended way of connecting to the internet when gaming online, fully aware that you want to use a wireless connection and we are just trying to do as much testing of your hardware as we can, the next test will be to test the wireless connection when you are the only one using the internet.

You are welcome btw

Sorry about the delay, i went to work while it was updating.

I agree is is contradictory. I have updated the system and double checked the device manager still nothing that shows it has any issues. The ethernet card in this PC is a piece of junk. It is also a wifi card that gets a so/so wifi connection but a very slow ethernet connection.

Tried running a continuous speed test program to see if it shows the drops. This is what it gave me in 30ish mins.

No worries about the delay, none of us can be here 24/7 and we understand that you have other things to attend to.

Not sure what is going on there as your Ethernet connection should beat any wireless connection hands down.

Have you or can you try using the computer when you are the only one that is connecting to the router via a wireless connection, this will rule out you getting the short straw when it comes to priority service should your wife or son also be using the service.

Can you post an updated Speccy url for us if you will, we need to see what services and devices you have that can be temporarily disconnected so that you can test the internet connection with the least amount of demand on it, this could be a slow process but it is the only way to get to the cause of the issue, all the evidence throughout your thread as in what you have replaced and what you have tried definitely points towards your computer having a problem with the internet service

our router is upstairs that i use wifi to. We have a wired connection that comes down here but i think its damaged because any pc using that is dramaticly slower. The connection wire was here when we bought the place.

In our router settings i set myself as high priority as well as have been the only one connected to it and still get the same issue.

Apart from trying a known good Ethernet connection you are only left with two other things to try.

(1) Disable all non essential apps that rely on the internet for updates etc, this includes getting rid of Driver Easy and Spybot etc.

(2) Take the computer as close as you can to the router and test, there may well be something between the computer and the router that is causing interference, the second option would also allow you to try the Ethernet cable that goes into the router.

Ill tey getting rid of the programs. My pc is about 3 feet feom my wives with no issue. I had also emailed IBUYPOWER about this and they β€œlooked” into the issue for like 6 days and finally suggested to reinstall windows fresh, any idea if that would help before i wipe all my stuff, after i remove the other programs

The only way that I can see reinstalling Windows would help is if you have conflicting software on the computer at present, if I was going down this route I would be clean installing Windows 10 and the drivers for the MB etc and while only using the wireless device that the computer shipped with.
