WiFi Router for AT&T U-verse?

Quick question. The router provided to me by AT&T sucks. I am two rooms away and experiencing signal lose on my laptop. So I was thinking of just buying a new router with an external antenna and maybe switching it over to 5gHz instead of the default 2.4 or whatever it is, because my download speed sucks.

Now AT&T U-Verse isn’t cable internet is it, isn’t it just a version of DSL, (Which completely sucks)? so what kind of router should I purchase, and can you give me some suggestions. I’d like to try to keep it under like $80.00 for the new router.

Also if it could support a bunch of connections that would be nice, because currently its my laptop, phone, TV, printer, my roommates phone, laptop, and TV, and my other roommates phone, laptop, and tv are connected to the network, I’m sure that is eating the speed too. The router model I have is 5268ACFXN

What happens when you disconnect from the router and connect directly to the modem?

Do you rent or own the equipment you have now?
If you rent it they will fix and or replace.
If you own it you are on you own if you have issues (or their assistance is limited as far as the equipment is concerned).

The last modem I purchased was $ 90 from the ISP.
The last router I purchase was $ 125.

Placement of the router and what all it has to pass through can and will interfere with the signal.

Here is a short list of some things that can interfere with signal.
Interference coming from other wireless providers
The channel you broadcast over
Cordless phones and child monitors

As far as 5 Ghz read here and see if this explains it. 5GHz vs 2.4GHz Wireless LAN

Here is a resources that may help with some of the issues you are experiencing.

I switched over to 5ghz, and my speed is about 4 Mbps faster, this is totally fine considering my down speed was a measly 1mbps Max most of the time. So far I am the only one in my house using the 5ghz signal, everyone else is using 2.4ghz, so I’m going to keep it on 5ghz. The signal strength is about the same but my connection speed is a lot better, I was having a hard time with hd YouTube videos, but since I switched frequencies it’s working fine, although I shouldn’t have had a problem before. I think it’s just that at&t sucks, but I’m getting free internet through my landlord so I can’t really complain. I’ll see how this works for a week then give an update, at the worse I’ll have to call at&t and have them troubleshoot it. Oh and we are renting the equipment as far as I know.

Sorry guys, I’m at my parents house for the holidays, so no updates, but I can say that switching over from 2.4 to 5 GHz band seemed to have solved my problem.
