Can download some programs but then unable to install them

        Yes, looks like it. Just downloaded and successfully installed Whatsapp, so looks as if that problem sorted.

        Very many thanks for all the help on getting that sorted.

        I downloaded Winsock.reg and Winsock2.reg and completed CMD commands but as downloads now installing OK I haven’t gone on to set a static ip - on the basis that as the issue I had has been resolved it may be best as it is - or should I carry on and set the static ip?

                  Sorry! Thought I’d replied to that! I don’t have the original Vista install disk, or any of the original disks, so really would have to delete progs via Control Panel or Revo etc. I just wondered about all those Microsoft ones and whether recent updates have rendered any of the older ones unnecessary.
