    Lord Chance,

    [ul]
[li]Thank you for your suggestion. However, I don’t see β€œrepair” in Tools β†’ E-Mail Accounts in Outlook 2003. I am now also getting an error when going through a non-AT&T email ( I have more than one email address). It says β€œVerify email address in account properties. Server responded: 504 Authenticate first (#5.5.0)” Of course this email address has always worked in the past. What has also changed is what’s happening to the email in the Outbox for both email addresses. Sometimes I open it right away and hit β€œSend” and it goes. Sometimes it takes two or three attempts to get it sent. And sometimes it just sends it itself, after showing the error message, without my doing anything.[/li][/ul]

It is starting to appear that your email profile may be damaged. The profile file contains the email and settings for Outlook and if it is corrupt enough you can lose email functionality. What corrupted it? I would suggest letting the PCHF Security Experts have a go to see if you are virus free. Just to be on the safe side. I can assure that their methods are not intrusive and won’t cost you anything but your time.

I want to verify that it’s not a software issue.

I want you to try Mozilla Thunderbird. Download it, install it, run it, and setup your email account using it. Thunderbird will display more information about the connection issues if it’s indeed having issues.

          jmarket:

I set up Thunderbird for two email addresses. I did not have a failure with either one but Outlook doesn’t fail every time, either. Outlook actually seems to work for a while immediately after a failure. I’ll use T-Bird for a day and then post how it worked.

sent mail from Outlook and had the problem. While Outlook was not sending the mail, but before it put out error message, I sent a message using same email to/from addresses from T-bird and that mail was sent. After that Outlook came back with the error message.

Have you removed (deleted) the email configuration in Outlook and the recreated it?

              NOT reconfigure NOT edit.

Just to sure I understand what you want me to do: I should REMOVE the account entries for these two email addresses, then ADD them back in?

Yes that is correct REMOVE the configuration and then RE ADD the one that is giving you the issue. If both are then do both.

Make sure to go to the site and find the proper setting for your email account.

I will do that today but I just saw something I hadn’t noticed. While Outlook is failing to send the email, Outlook in the tray says Outlook is synchronizing folders. After that disappears I get the error message.

I did that a few times today and saw that synchronizing message is there each time. After the third attempt today, and the third failure, a minute later the email just went but without a further attempt by me.

I worked with AT&T support. I deleted the Outlook account and re-built it. I also changed the email password. Outlook, at least so far, is working.

However, I can’t get T-bird to work. It looks like it is using the old password. It was a nightmare until I somehow managed to find where T-bird keeps the password (I doubt that I could find that again). I apparently changed it. But it is still says the server is timing out, which is what I had after I changed the password on AT&T but had not changed it on T-Bird.

I even uninstalled T-bird, then re-installed it. When I did that, it showed all of my email addresses, emails and folders that had been there before. I wanted to do a clean re-installation to clear up password issues but somehow it came right back the way it had been.

Bottom line is that Outlook appears to be working but now T-Bird is not

That is good to hear User101. There are several things that can cause issue with email. Antivirus, add-ons and the firewall to name a few but the most common cause is a corrupt configuration file or profile as it is sometimes called. (y)

Thank you for the explanation, Lord Chance.

Any suggestions as to what to do with T-Bird? Or perhaps how to completely remove it and re-install it from scratch?

When you open Thunderbird does the popup Login Failed come up?
If it does select Click Enter New Password
Type in new password put a check mark in the box below to save the password
                            Click OK
                            Exit Thunderbird
Reopen Thunderbird and see if that fixed it.

Other wise you can remove the account configuration like in Outlook and recreate it.
Instructions to follow have to leave for a meeting.

As Lord Chance suggested a corrupted profile is a common cause. If you wish you can backup your old Tbird settings first using Mozbackup HERE or Hekasoft HERE.

HERE’S a guide to show how to delete a Tbird profile
