Updating your BIOS can cut boot times, fix compatibility issues, and improve overall performance--or brick your system if you do it wrong. But with recent AM5 motherboard issues, an out-of-date BIOS can leave your PC vulnerable.
I have managed to get it to try and boot from the CD but windows graphic comes up but just hangs there doing nothing. Can I remove XP altogether first with OS uninstall ???
Many thanks for this . I am going to go with the DBAN route and remove the XP altogether and start again. I think I may also update the BIOS version first or can I do that after the DBAN operation. Not to worried if I mess this up as I am learning a great deal. Thanks

You will need to update the bios through the operating system, meaning you will need to do this before you wipe the HDD. I’d suggest doing the update.
Hope you don’t mind me butting in here, but the last BIOS update for that board was in 2009. It really is ancient and probably time to move on to something less prehistoric. Having said that I have installed Windows 10 on a P35 chipset Gigabyte socket 775 motherboard. Although there was no support for anything beyond Windows 7, as is the case with your mobo, the install of Windows 10 made all functions work without issues.
