recently had to start using a vista laptop that hadnt been updated since Feb 2016. Ran windows update - and its never ever completing even if after leaving for day usiing google has evidenced im not an isolated case but cant actually work out the remediation steps
install (use the direct download) the Tweaking.com - Windows all in one repair tool. Then boot Windows into Safe Mode, (Make Certain To Run This Program As Administrator) then run through the Prescan on step 2 tab. Then skip to step 5 and create a system restore point. Then go to the repair tab…
this is for sure the most detailed response Ive seen - ive not updated since February 2016 having only recently had to go back to Vista. I cant fugure out what steps Im menti to follow for a Vista SP2 32bit seems that all the detals are for 64 bit
I don’t run Vista and in fact have only seen it close up twice while helping a senior citizen. I do get a paid newsletter called WindowsSecrets. A reader wrote in complaining he had no updates since April. The editor of the newsletter also has two computers running Vista in his home and when he checked, he discovered that these computers had no received updates since April either. I mention all this because I’m helping a poster in another forum who hasn’t gotten updates since February. We are almost done updating his computer.
First double check that you have these 2 updates installed because they are supposed to speed up checking for updates: KB3145739 and KB3153199. If not, you can download and install manually. Before you attempt to install any update manually, set Windows update to NEVER and reboot. If you don’t do this, when the update tries to install, it can run for hours. If you turn check for updates off and reboot, the update will attempt to check but will stop after a minute or two and ask if you want to install the update.
The links are from a non-IE browser. If you need these updates and use IE, I will post those links.
3145739 32 bit is 2nd item Microsoft Update Catalog
Are the date and time showing correctly?
Look and see if this is listed in your update list KB3191203 as being successful. If not [COLOR=rgb(255, 128, 0)]Download to you desktop and install.
