Need some help to open heic images

Purchased an iPhone XR a few weeks ago and prepare for backing up the photos to my Win 7 PC. Connected iPhone to computer and navigate to DCIM folder. All pics are in .heic and the photo app can not open it. What’s wrong with this?

I had to put it on my PC for some reason about a year ago - wasn’t for Apple pics though (from memory).

Apple documentation does not work on Windows 7 and the copytrans tool failed to open the image. instead, it converts the image to jpg

you can also download an app from the MS Store.
search for HEIC and you’ll see some options.

Win7 does not come with MS Store. I know you are talking about HEIF Image Extension: HEIF Image Extension - Microsoft Apps

Sadly, it is not an option. I am still checking the tools suggested in this post: How to Open HEIC File on Windows 10, Mac, Linux and Android

My first priority is to open the files instead of converting.
