    4tb hdd drive problem win7

So not sure is this due to Win7 but for some reason my brand new 4tb wd red hdd isn’t recognized by the system and wont even boot, all I get is a black screen with a white underscore flashing and that is it. When I turn it off and unplug the hdd and turn it back on it boots in just fine. Also it makes these weird noises which I am not sure it should. It like a small electric engine powering up then clicks four times or so then it just does that in a loop until I turn off the pc. When I hook it up afterwards the disk management doesn’t recognize it. Also it doesn’t do the noises, just once and that is it.

The motherboard recognizes 3 hdd, one is brand new ssd 250 gb which haves the fresh system on, win7 64bit sp1, then there are two others, the old storage which is 1tb and this brand new 4tb that I would use it as extra storage for recording etc. I have couple more hdd which are also 1tb each and all of them work fine. Now I know vagely that there is a problem with win7 and booting large hdd but far as I know just for the system if you use it for storage should be just fine.

So I need more opinions before I do anything or maybe should I just return the hdd is it possible that is actually broken? It would be nice if there is a solution for this because I do need the 4tb extra space.

Hi @blue44 and welcome to PCHF

In order to use a 4TB hard drive, you have to format the drive as NTFS using GPT.

Thank you, I remember being here few years back but I guess the old website got closed and the information I had here is irelevant not active etc so I made a new account.

I will try to mess around with it through the windows instalation disc then or bios. If pc recognizes it there at all that is. Never had this issue before even at work where I messed around with hundreds of pcs so all this is new to me. The guy who sent me this told me this hdd is for servers and not for pc so I should handle it accordingly. Right now all this is on hold while I download tons of backups on other drives. Hopefully tomorrow I can dig into this again.

Sorry, been busy and after trying everything possible turns out the mentioned hdd was broken so there is nothing to be done to it but return it to the manufacturer and now I am waiting for the replacement.
