I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, very old machine. All is good with the exception of Cd Rom drive. It will accept and turn a disc for a moment, but Pc never loads info. I opened - Control Panel> All Control Panel Items> Troubleshooting. Clicked Troubleshooting Hardware & Devices. It detected a problem with the CDDVDRW device stating : A driver for this device has been disabled, an alternate driver maybe providing this function ( Code 32 ). So I view the Device properties and see Device Details, Update Device, Roll Back Device, Disable Device and Uninstall Devise. The Roll Back Devise will not ‘Highlight’ when scrolled over. Help finding solution would be fantastical. Can’t make cd or download programs…

Could it actually be a faulty CD unit?
They only cost about $AUD15 for a new one.
Have you tried different discs to double check it’s not just the one disc at fault?
In Device Manager, uninstall the CD unit and reboot the PC.
Also try the SFC /scannow command first from an elevated command prompt to check for system file corruption.
And last straw, if that doesn’t work try, (admittedly I’ve had success with this when the CD unit vanished from the system but you may get lucky)

[li]go into regedit[/li][li]go to this key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E9 65-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete the entries for UpperLimits and LowerLimits[/li][li]exit[/li][li]reboot[/li][/ul]Comment

Ok here is a link from a Certified Microsoft Partner.. For a driver for the cd/dvd drive.. http://semantic.gs/tsstcorp_cddvdw_s...river_download
Scroll down to download options… Click on 2. Driver Installation Manager
Let the manager scan your pc for the correct driver..Just follow the prompts.
It would be prudent to create a restore point, before installing this driver..Comment

Upon rebooting, system didn’t recognize it.
In this case, you scan for hardware changes.- Open Device Manager
- Click the Action item on the top menu
- Click Scan for hardware changes
Give it time to work. Your optical drive should be found and a driver for it installed.Comment
